Monarch in cocoon that might fall off

I've just read that Monarchs will winter over as cats or in cocoons. Wow! Now I have two cocoons that I've been watching carefully and nothing is happening though you can see the design of the wings thru' the green of the cocoon.

Problem is they will fall to the ground when the milkweed leaf falls off it's plant.

What should one do to protect them.

Gently detach the thread and put them some where safe and protected for the winter or what?

Please help.

By the way I posted back in late August that tho' I had a 70 sq feet big butterfly garden...no Monarchs....well early September I had 3 at least and loads of eggs on the large common Milkweed very big plant....so that was nice.
