Ferns of NC - Having a Hard Time ID'ing

I live in a forest of 23 acres, mine, and am surrounded by hundreds of acres that belong to others including the State of NC near Falls Lake. I press the ferns in telephone books, take photos, make notes on where they live, and use a loup to see the details. I really get stuck trying to reference them to find their real scientific name. It is all so confusing. Hey, I can do flowers but the descriptions for ferns is way beyond my comprehension. What would you all suggest I do for identification? Are there books out there that really show side-by-side examples, are there photos that show the differences? Do they look different in the Pacific Northwest than here in the South? What do you have growing that are "natives" that have scientific names? I have purchased several ferns, with names, that live in a confined environment but those beautiful wild ones' names elude me. I think I need help.
