Do I need to 'pinch' the first leaves? Type 3 clematis

I've got an herbaceous clemaits that blooms on new wood. I planted it last year from a bare root, and it only got about 1 foot tall. This year, I'm expecting it to climb the lamp post (with supports for twining.) It has just started to emerge from the ground, and is about 2 inches tall. Should I pinch off the top leaves, to make it bushier on the bottom? Please advise. Thank you!

There needs to be 2 sets of buds on each stem below where you pinch it back. It sounds like your clematis is young enough not to need any pinching back this year. Give it some time to put up more growth. Watch to see if more stems come from the ground around the clematis base. For now I would say don't pinch it back. Give it plenty of water & tomato or rose food & it will grow much more this year. Next year will be the year it does its best. Young clematis take until the third year to do their best.

heyruthie, did you say you had a Herbaceous clematis? some herbaceous clems only grow to a couple of feet.whats the name of your plant ?
