Smooth Arizona cypress has great red bark.

Calocedrus decurrens should be worth a try. Also just about any species of Cupressus from a non-coastal location (i.e., not C. macrocarpa, C. goveniana, etc., as they can't cope with summer heat well).

I'm a bit confused why you have eliminated Calocedrus decurrens and Juniperus occidentalis from your list. Do you already have them and are looking for more trees like that or something else? I think both should do well for you, especially since I've seen both doing well in zone 6 Kansas.

I've seen some Juniperus ashei with similar looking red bark, but it doesn't seem to be a uniform characteristic of that species. Ashe Juniper should grow well for you though. I've seen it growing on very dry South and West facing slopes and it's all over parts of the Ozarks and the Edward's Plateau.

I guess I didn't ask the right question. Which is your favorite?. Also, does Juniperus occidentalis looks similar to Juniperus deppeana when young?. Thanks
