New Orleans Bot Garden Request List

Here is the list of plants the New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park is requesting, to replant their magnificent gardens. The garden originated in 1936, and if you saw the satellite photos after Katrina, all of City Park was underwater to the top step of the art museum for around 2 weeks.

Brenda, Would you post this over on the wintersowing forum? I don't know how to make links. I enjoyed having coffee with you the other day. Shannon

Are you going to send seeds and cuttings or just plants?

I sent them an email with a list of everything I had based on their list and includes cuttings, seeds and plants.
I hope to hear back from them, I think it's great to be able to help out a wonderful Botanical Garden such as this one.

    Brenda,
I hope it's ok...I put this link in the Rose Forums...they lost their roses, too.

I emailed your questions to NOBG and here is reply:

"Hello Brenda. Any of the mentioned options are fine.
Generally, seeds should transport more easily, but
rooted cuttings/divisions should get here okay, I
believe. We are able to accept plants now, our
biggest holdup is in delivery. FedEx is probably the
most reliable option for shipping at this time, the
Postal Service is spotty, UPS still will not deliver
to our area. I'm thinking that it may also be more
efficient and affordable for you to coordinate a group
    shipment.
    Thank you for your help.

maybe we could assemble some boxes for shipment at the spring swap? i visualize a few tables set-aside for donations ...

Maybe it would be a good idea to send around a box by mail now(or soon) to collect seed to send. I would think it would be better for them to have the seeds as early as possible. If we start a swap box like we did in the spring we could just have one bag in the box designated for seeds for the NOBG.

Great idea, Shari. Are there any volunteers to start the box? We could start a new post, asking for people to email their addresses to the box initiator top make a "chain" list to go in box. John usually does this for us, but he's off to Oklahoma Monday.

    Second email from NOBG:
"Things here will never be the
same, but they can still be great. We are looking at
this as positively as possible. We were very lucky to
have a very generous donor step in and pay the staff,
front money to replace some equipment, replace the
hedges and some of our collection, and repair the
infrastructure. Although it did take a lot to acquire
our collection, most of it is replacable. We had a
stand of 60-80 year old sweet olives that can't be
replaced, which is what hurts the most. The oaks seem
to have fared well, though, and there's no way that we
could have replaced them, of course. It would be nice
to know that our new collection will have been
contributed from people all over the country. It also
allows us to step back and 'fix' some things that
didn't work and to upgrade/modernize our irrigation
and electrical in ways we never could have otherwise.
It is still very disheartening to see the scope of the
damage, but many of us are hoping it's a chance for us
all to start over not just in the garden, but
everywhere, using all the knowledge that we have
picked up along the way, making things they way they
    should have been all along.
    Thank you again,
    David"

I'm going to FedEx my stuff to them Monday because I am sending plants as well as seeds.

It sounds like they are taking a really positive attitude about this heartbreaking experience. I have a few seeds I can donate to a seed box, and I am sure that we could really get some good things together at the spring swaps. I am planning to send a couple of live plants now, but I know I will have more at springtime. -Ais.

I'll be sending my own box also, as I'll be sending some small century plants.
    Here's what else I'm sending:
    Albemoschus moschatus seeds

Datura metel 'Black Currant', double yellow, single white seeds and cuttings
    Eupatorium fistulosum seeds
    Fastia japonica cutting

    Gardenia 'AugustBeauty'cuttings
    Hibiscus acetosella seeds
    Hibiscus militaris seeds
    Hibiscus radiatus seeds

    Liriope muscari 'variegata' plant

    Malva parviflora seeds

    Hi all,

The Parkway Partners is a nonprofit that operates community garden spaces in New Orleans. I know because I garden in one of these spaces, since I have no yard where I live!

Our garden had a cinderblock wall collapse on part of it and then it was bulldozed, further wrecking things. This is only one of 40 or so damaged gardens.

Anyhow the point of my post is, if you have other seeds/plants after giving to the botanical garden, you could contact Parkway Partners at www.ParkwayPartners.com and I'm sure they could use the help.

    thanks

I will send some seeds to Parkway Partners this week. To this point I've been debating if a botanical garden would really be interested in my ordinary seeds but y'all might appreciate, datura, morning glory varieties, torenia, cypress vine and double echinacea.
