2010 New Additions photo gallery! (Post yours!)

I know snow is piled up on a lot of people, but sure enough, Spring is truely right around the corner - even if it's a fair-sized corner for some.

Spring for many conifer lovers/collectors means new additions to their garden/landscapes. New additions make you feel good - like curling your toes in deep plush carpet!

They offer cheer, even on cold March/April days, and in most cases, the start of a long, happy life in someone's treasured garden. I'll post an image or two every few days of some of my newest garden members - let's see yours as well!(try and keep photo's at 1024x768 max)

Picea abies 'Nidiformis Kalous' (from Bob Fincham - Coenosium Gardens)

Picea omorika 'Hexenbessen' (Whistling Gardens - Canada eh?)

    Thanks Dax, I'm both glad to help and glad to show others my new arrivals. I'm sure this post will pick up many other pictures once guys in the midwest begin to thaw and their cool orders begin to arrive.

    I'll try and keep this post towards the top with a few new pics a couple times a week.

  • 16 years ago

    Hey Will,you are going to love the "nidiformis Kalous".I got my own 2 years ago and it has grown maybe 1/4 inch.It is in alot of sun and seems to be doing great. Joe

  • 16 years ago

    Yes, it's a beauty for sure Joe.

    A few more today...

    Tsuga mertinsiana 'Elizabeth'
    {{gwi:656223}}

    Pinus parviflora 'Goldilocks'
    {{gwi:656227}}

    Abies concolor 'Candicans'

  • 16 years ago

    Wow! ...that's a big P.p. 'Goldilocks' !
    Is that really a new addition in 2010 ?

    Really like the Tsuga mertinsiana 'Elizabeth' !

  • 16 years ago

    I've been working on some new raised beds and finally have enough done to show. There are 4 other beds under construction, but these 3 are largely complete.

    Very nice selection kaitain.

    I envy you your abundant space !

    PS. where abouts are you located ? (must be fairly far south, going by your Z7)

  • 16 years ago

    Yep Jaro, that's new this year. I tried a smaller Goldilocks and it died on me. I figure the largest/more established specimen will have a better chance of taking off. I'm lucky to live in a region where conifer nurseries seem to be all over the place.

    Fantastic new beds Kaitain. Your space is certainly going to make even the largest conifer collection envious. You've also picked up some LARGE(!!) and beautiful specimens. I'd love to see pics once the maples come out of hibernation as well.

    -Will

  • 16 years ago

    Killer Kaitin! It all looks real nice.

    Dax

  • 16 years ago

    Thanks for the comments everyone. I will post more pics as things progress.

    Jaro - I'm in Tennessee, just west of Nashville about 45 miles. We're really 6b I suppose, but it seems to depend on the year. :)

    Keeping this thread going until some of you other folks thaw out.

    A few more today, cold but sunny!

    Pinus parviflora 'Blue Lou'
    {{gwi:656254}}

    Cedrus deodara 'Gold Nugget'
    {{gwi:656257}}

  • 16 years ago

    Nice pics Will. I will have to get out and take some to add. I love that Gold Nugget, what is the growth rate?

  • 16 years ago

    Still trying to get that Abies veitchii 'Rumburk' -- seems like a slippery fish, that one !

  • 16 years ago

    I believe that Gold Nugget specimen is about 6-8 years old though it's a best guess. It took some hard temps here this winter, it remains to be seen if it will survive.

    jaro, I'm pretty sure Bob Fincham has some nice specimens of 'Rumburk' still. That is where I acquired my plant.

    One more I just got in the ground.

    Cedrus deodara 'Home Park'
    {{gwi:656259}}

    -Will

  • 16 years ago

    Most of these were acquired late last fall, but were wintered over in my nursery area It seems like most of my purchases last year ended up there waiting for me to figure out where they were going. I finally got to start planting here the last few days as the weather has gotten a little bit nicer finally and the snow is gone!

    {{gwi:656261}}
    I ripped out an ill sited Smoke Bush that was an overgrown bully and replaced it with a Cedrus deodara 'Gold Cascade'. Pushing a little bit, so we'll see if they survive.

    The 'Conica's' on each side are coming out as well, I am waiting for their replacements to come.

    Location of a planned new bed on my north prperty line:
    {{gwi:656263}}
    Picea pungens 'Hoopsi' @ back left corner:
    {{gwi:656265}}
    Picea pungens 'Straw' @ back right corner:
    {{gwi:656267}}
    Picea abies 'Wingles Weeper' @ front and center:
    {{gwi:656269}}

    I will be cutting that bed in the next few days and mulching it and adding smaller plants in very soon.

    Sequoiadendron giganticum 'Pendulum'
    {{gwi:656271}}

    And a new bed to the south of the waterfall I planned last fall, and am finally getting planted up:
    {{gwi:656273}}

    Abies nordmandia 'Golden Spreader' planted as the center piece last fall:
    {{gwi:656276}}

    Behind the 'Golden Spreader', what was sold to me as Larix leptolepsis 'Pendula'. I can't find any info on it though, Anyone know anything Ken, Dave, Coniferjoy?
    {{gwi:656278}}

    Behind and to the left of the Larix on the back corner Taxus baccata 'Standishii'
    {{gwi:656279}}

    To the right of the Taxus, Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Curley Top' that I transplanted here. It doesn't look very good though.
    {{gwi:656281}}

    To the right of it, Picea pungens 'Walnut Glen'. Transplanted again.
    {{gwi:656282}}

    And lastly, on the back side of the waterfall, Abies lasciocarpa 'Compacta'. Debateing if this was a good choice though.
    {{gwi:656284}}

    Upon review a couple of the pics didn't come out very clear. Sorry. It was getting dark and I was in a rush.

    Eliot

  • 16 years ago

    Eliot, I'd be careful with both Picea pungens 'Walnut Glen' and Abies nord. 'Golden Spreader' will both want considerable shade, maybe no more then 3-4 hours of sun to make it through your Summers. I'm envious of your place though, you have a lot of space and should get tons of sunshine as well. Thanks for posting!

    -Will

  • 16 years ago

    Will-

    Thanks for the heads up. I took that into consideration for the Abies. I didn't know it would be an issue for the Picea, good to know. Not more that 8 feet to the south (left of photo) of the Golden Spreader are two 30-40 foot tall oak trees, and another one about 12 feet further south of it. The grass between the Oaks and the new bed is around five foot, large enough to get the mower through. It is a nice filtered sun area there. Should get some morning and evening sun, and filtered all through the day. I'll see if I can get a pic of the area looking south in the morning.

    I've only got 2.5 acres, about one acre is heavily treed with Oaks, Hickory, and Walnut trees, I've got a large leech filed for my septic, the house, a 50x50 pole barn, and a lot of driveway, so the space gets eaten up very quickly! BUT, I'm going to make the best of it. I'm just getting started. Plus I can always cut down the old deciduous trees for firewood too!

    I've got quite a few orders coming in the next month or so, so I'll keep adding pics.

  • 16 years ago

    Fantastic looking plants Jim. Our tastes are very similar, as are our locations. I love the smaller doug-fir dwarves. That omorika looks interesting as well.

    Also, I know you've heard it before, but your camera and photography work is exceptional.

    -Will

  • 16 years ago

    Your Picea omorika Losely are a Picea orientalis !
    Not omorika.
    Clément

  • 16 years ago

    You have a very nice dwarf conifer selection Jim!
    Clément is right, the 'Losely' you show us is a Picea orientalis cultivar.

    The true name of Cedrus brevifolia 'Kenwith' is:
    Cedrus libani subsp. brevifolia 'Kenwith'.

    Tsuga canadensis 'Popaleuski' must be written as:
    Tsuga canadensis 'Popeleski'.

  • 16 years ago

    Tsuga canadensis 'Popeleski' is fantastic!!!

    Here's my first conifer of 2010: Cryptomeria japonica 'Sekkan Sugi'

    Jim, any chance I can use your photos for the ACS Database?
    Send me an email please with your last name if so (or not).

    Thanks,

    Dax

  • 16 years ago

    No problem Dax, sent you a e-mail with more info.

    I always get omorika and orientalis mixed up!

    Thanks for starting these threads Will, it's like being a kid (from the 70's) looking at the Sears catalog!

  • 16 years ago

    Jim, the email didn't come thru to either of my accounts.
    Try sending to:
    conifercollector@hotmail.com

    Thank you much.

    Dax

  • 16 years ago

    Hi Josh,
    You bought yourself a nice Cryptomeria which will grow out in a big tree some day.
    It's cultivar name isn't 'Sekkan-sugi' anymore but only 'Sekkan'.
    The word sugi means Cryptomeria in the Japanese language.

  • 16 years ago

    Thank you, Edwin! I've made a note.
    I had a feeling that "sugi" was redundant...
    The same goes for C. j. Bandai[-sugi], I assume?

    Josh

  • 16 years ago

    The addition of a chainsaw and the removal of some really ugly old scrub shrubs at the end of my driveway have enabled me to add in some new plants.

    Basically this entire lower bank was all garbage 'evergreen' shrubs. They flowered for like a week, once a year and besides that looked ugly and really overgrown. At least it looked OK when it snowed.
    {{gwi:638079}}

    A side angled shot and also showing the newly cleared and planted right bank.
    {{gwi:656323}}

    Picea engelmannii 'Bush's Lace', Picea pungens 'Glauca Procumbens' Pinus thunbergiana 'Thunderhead' and Pinus strobus 'Pendula' from left to right.
    {{gwi:656326}}

    From the driveway. Tsuga mertinsiana(left) and Picea pungens 'Bakeri' up front.
    {{gwi:656329}}

    A few other plants fit in here and there.

    Pinus mugo 'Ambergold'
    {{gwi:656332}}

    Picea pungens 'Montana Ave.'
    {{gwi:656336}}

    Abies alba 'Green Spiral'
    {{gwi:656339}}

    Lots of work, but it's 'good' work, or as Ken might say, 'God's work'.

    -Will

  • 16 years ago

    Very-impressive. I like that look.

    Dax

  • 16 years ago

    nwconifergarden,
    What is the yellow/green conifer in the background of the photo of Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Happy Camper'? Is it a 'Chief Joseph' that is changing back to green?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • 16 years ago

    It really looks great Will.
    Cher

  • 16 years ago

    Josh,
    It counts for all the Cryptomeria japonica cultivars who had sugi in their name like:
    'Bandai-sugi'
    'Jindai-sugi'
    'Rasen-sugi'
    etc.

    Will, you have a very nice selection of conifers.
    Can you send me a list of all conifers you have in your collection?
    Thanks in advance!

  • 16 years ago

    Hi Eliot,

    I just red your question about the Larix leptolepis 'Pendula'.
    This is the old name for Larix kaempferi 'Pendula'
    There's plenty of information about this plant at the internet.

    Here is a link that might be useful: Larix kaempferi 'Pendula'

  • 16 years ago

    Edwin, I wish I could. I'm still compiling the list. It's been busy busy busy outside this Fall/Winter/Spring. I've basically been working two jobs, but it's been fun too. This Summer(June maybe) I plan on taking photos and documenting every different conifer I have - at which point I can either send you a CD with the pics(some 800 or so conifers) as well as any database I end up with.

    -Will

  • 16 years ago

    Mike,

    Yes, you are right that is a Chief Joseph that is starting to get more green.

    Amazing collection Will!

    Jim

  • 16 years ago

    Shoot me a photo CD Will, please.

    Thank ya!

    Dax

  • 16 years ago

    Will, thanks in advance for sending me a CD and your data base of your conifer collection.
    This will be a big job but will be very joy full!

  • 16 years ago

    Joy-

    Just got back into town and am catching up. Thanks for the info on the Larix...I was beginning to wonder if someone had screwed up a name somewhere along the way. That was the main reason I had held back on ordering any of the other varieties named 'Pendula'. Thanks again, I will get it changed.

    Since I read regularly this Forum, I suffer from the same disease as others. Buy conifers ;-)

    My new conifers this year :
    {{gwi:656343}}
    Pinus Parviflora Tanima No Yuki

    {{gwi:656347}}
    Abies Koreana Icebreaker

    {{gwi:656350}}
    Pinus Densiflora Low Glow

    A Cedrus Libani Green Prince and an Abies Lasiocarpa Logan Pass is on the way.

  • 16 years ago

    Ykli-

    I'm jelous of the 'Icebreaker'!!! Coenosium is the only place I have even seen it, and he is sold out.

    I just got 35 in from Stanley this morning. I'll try to get pics of them up in the following days. I'll prob. start a new thread if nobody minds as this one is getting quite long.

    35 more pics will start getting really heavy!

    Eliot

  • 16 years ago

    How can someone be jealous of one when he is receiving 35 new ones ;-)

    Good idea to continue on a new thread.

  • 16 years ago

    Dennis Dodge of Bethlehem Nursery lists Ice Breaker as available this year. I got one from him last fall along with a great Sciadopitys 'Yellow Dream'

    He will email you an availability list or you can contact me through my member page and I'll forward it to you.

    Dennis contact info is available through his website (not often updated)

    keith

  • 16 years ago

    I'll make a new thread since this one has received so many images and might be overwhelming to some internet connections.

    -Will

  • 16 years ago

    Ykli-

    Isn't it human nature to be jealous and want what others have? Just kidding! It is a beautiful plant, and I'm happy for you, but I still really want one myself! I did get my Stanley order yesterday, and they are all very nice plants. Watch the new thread for pics hopefully later today of many of them!

    I was really disappointed though, I had several Calocedrus on the order and I guess they lost their whole crop over the winter. Might make me reconsider trying them here depending on what caused their demise in Oregon! They are rated to Zone 6 and though we are rated as 6 I still think we are a 5b at best. Though with careful selection of sites, I can usually keep Zone 6 plants alive with no problems.

    Keith-

    Thanks, I will contact you for the list. I have never ordered from Dennis though I always hear great things about him. I have been on the website several times before, but as you said it is wildly outdated...As mush as I hate to admit it, I am part of the modern McDonald's society that wants it Right Now!!!

    Eliot

  • 16 years ago

    I use to get a list from Dennis but not this year.I asked him he said he was having computer problems.Maybe it's my breath? Joe

  • 16 years ago

    His hard drive crashed and all his inventory was completely wiped out. This was about Feb. Can you imagine of that happened to you. It's worth your breath Joe. He's not wildly expensive either.

    Elliot - Dawes has several very nice Calocedrus decurrens seedlings they received from forestfarm. I have very good luck with zone 6 conifers too in my solid zone5a. I'm in the middle of a valley though with contouring hills with flat land as far as the eyes can see. I planted a seedling (fall 09 from forest farm at the lowest point on my property and it got crushed. Same happened with Tsuga mertensiana. I've said this before and I'll say it again, 'Ohio is a magical land' in the center of the US that seems to have a "wild" effect for those wishing to grow conifers... that normally might only survive in the Pacific Northwest. Cupressus lawsonia - Calocedrus - probably all Sciadopity's rated to zone 6. I mean the list goes on and on...

    Late,

    Dax

    Amidheliot -

    May I ask you where you got your Picea abies 'Wingles Weeper'?

    Thanks!

    PlantMarker

  • 16 years ago

    Hey Dax,don't get your panties ruffled,i meant it as a joke.I think Dennis is a fine man and have been ordering from him for about 3 or 4 years.Anyway it was my fault i changed my e-mail address after he fixed his computer.And by the way it did happen to me,I lost 1,000 songs i paid for. Joe

  • 16 years ago

    Should have said would have lost.But backed them up on disk,as well as my family pictures. Joe

  • 16 years ago

    Plantmarker-

    The 'Wingles Weeper' came from Darren at Whistling Gardens in Canada last fall. I've gotten a lot from him over the last two years and have not been disappointed with a single plant yet. I've got something like 25 plants coming from him in the next few days. He has a huge selection and is real easy to work with.
