Dining room is finally finished.

Well, nearly. I still have a couple of things to do, such as get a different table cloth (maybe in jewel tone purple). All in all, I'm really pleased with how it turned out. It really was a dreadful space. And, like the rest of the house, there isn't much in the way of symmetry. Makes it extra hard to decorate. Here are the promised pix. Oh, and thanks for letting me vent during the process.

ANOTHER fine job by Steven...I LOVE watching and admiring your projects...I hope you have more rooms to do mister!!!!! Seriously, good job, it blends so much better with the kitchen now. I like it. A new tablecloth would be a nice addition..something with bold punch maybe?

FABULICOUS!! Oh, I love that hutch. That is a nice hunk 'o wood!! And that server is so nice, and the pottery...I LOVE IT. Really nice job. The walls are a really nice buttery color too, and looks lovely with the color of the orangeish room you can see peeking thru.
    Really nice.

Great job Steven, aren't you glad you did it now? Speaking of tablecloths, what is the background color in your rug? I can't tell if its greyish or a green. I think a tablecloth in a muted shade that ties in with the background color of your rug might look really nice, really showcase your beautiful dining room furniture. You could always use candles, flowers etc. to give it a bit of punch.

Fantastic job Steven ~ I love the color of your walls, your furniture is beautiful, I'd love to see close-ups of your beautiful pottery. I also like your, what I think is, doorbell chime nitch. Very cool! You will enjoy this room for a long, long time as well as that great kitchen you now have. Just in time for Thanksgiving!

You have done a wonderful job . The color is perfect and your decorations really add to the whole ambience of the room. I too would love to see the adjacent room...we have the same taste in color ! Caroline

Geesh!!! Just reread my post, it didn't come out the way I meant it. You know me Steven, the gal who doesn't complete her sentences, lousy spelling and can't compose a decent paragraph even if her life depended on it. I too love everything you have done in your dining room, it's FAB. You said you were thinking about getting another table cloth. It didn't even enter my mind that my tastes might not appeal to you, just started thinking to myself what else might look nice with your color scheme.
My tastes might not appeal to a lot of folks though, most of my decorating has been done on a shoestring. In my dining room I have a lot of black, my two makeshift sideboards are made up from unpainted furniture I painted black, my table top is roughly the same color as your beautiful furniture though, so I have muted green accents in pictures on one wall and I think it makes my $399 table and chairs look like a million dollars LOL. Steven love, am I forgiven, or do I have to sit here and try to pry my remaining size 10 foot out of my mouth, alas, once again.

Where did you get the jardiniere with pedestal beside the cabinet? I have the top of a McCoy's pottery white jardiniere but I know it once had a pedestal.

I came back to look again! Great place, wonderful space!

Indeed another great job, Steven! You said you are planning on a new tablecloth - do you think that is necessary? I don't know what the tabletop looks like, but I would love to see it with a runner only. I love the classic lines of the furniture and the soft buttery shade of the walls. Very well done, as always. Now we want to see it decorated for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Thanks Keesha - oh yes, we have more rooms to do. We have a bathroom that I best shut up about if'n I know what's good for me.

GGG - the hutch was a house warming gift from Brian's parents. We love it. I just bought the server and the library bar from an amazing place in Benicia, Ironhorse.

Annette - the main field of the rug is a deep green. The rest of the colors are muted golds, creams and purple. I'm not really sure that it's working in this room. I may replace it. And don't be silly. You didn't offend me in the least. Even re-reading what you wrote, I can't find anything insulting. But one more slip up like that and it's too the moon! LOL!!!

Edna - I don't think I would have made a very good designer. My taste is too eclectic. I've never really been one to do a room entirely in one style. I see a lot of lawsuits down that path :-)

Patti - it was entirely worth giving up the trip. I would have come home and there would be that paneling. Leering at me, having the last laugh.

Flower Lady, I'll be happy to post some pix of my pottery. I've got a lot of it. Mostly Roseville, but there are some other interesting pieces in the mix. Was there anything in particular you wanted to see? Sitting on the server is our collection of glass, so I don't think you meant those.

Thanks Caroline - the orange in the living room is a really hard color to get right on film. It always comes off as jarring, but it's really not. I'll see what I can do.

Cameron - the jardiniere thingy is actually a Carrera marble holy water font. I rescued it from a college I worked for in San Francisco. The school was housed in an old Catholic middle school. It was found in the boiler room covered in latex paint and they were going to toss it! Mine. The latex pealed right off. It's time to give it a good clean. Matter of fact, I've been meaning to post a cleaning question over on the Kitchen forum. Unless good marble tips can be found here.

Eduarda - I actually tried the table without a cloth and just a runner. The wood is beautiful, but it is very darkly stained cherry. It was just too much wood in such a small space. My next house will require a great big dining room. Nice as always to "chat".

Well thanks again for the input everyone. I'll be sure to post a picture of our Thanksgiving table.

    Best,

    Steven

...about the doorbell niche. These were all the rage at the time this house was built. The original doorbell had long stopped functioning. Fine with me because it was bone ugly. I found this guy in the Bay Area that is making these beautiful doorbells again and had to get it for the space. We still need to get it hooked up and centered, but it's my favoritist thing in the room.

"My next house will require a great big dining room."

Actually, by most European standards, your dining room is a fairly big size. Most of you wouldn't believe how small rooms are in many European countries. I can never get over it when I see you Americans describing a room as "small" and then showing photos of places we Europeans would deem big or even huge, LOL! We do indeed have a difference in scale...

I looked at the photos again and indeed it's a great job you have done there.

Steven, The dinning room re-do looks wonderful. You have a flare for the eclectic. Not many people can pull that off but your one who certainly did!!

We have the same chairs but mine are in my kitchen...love them.

Bravo on a job well done...Vikki

I love it, classy and warm, I too would love to see some more pics of your glass and pottery.
The BATHROOM ??? you must have a death wish(LOL), whats Brian saying about that idea? Martha

That is one lovely, warm and inviting dining room, Steven! What a wonderful space to share home cooked meals with family and friends. Looks like there's plenty of room for some late night poker games, too. ; )

Love your wall color! It reminds me of the butter-pecan color I have on several of my walls. And your marble jardiniere is quite the find - lucky you!

    Great job! : )

Thanks Tracy, Vikki, Mart, Diana and Martha...here's a before:

You are absolutely right, Eduarda. Standard room sizes in Europe are much, much smaller than we're used to here in the States. This is the biggest place I've ever lived in. The only reason I would want more space in the dining room is so I can have more people sit down together for a meal. The room is only 15 x 11 feet. But with enough wine, I can squeeze about eight people around this table. Good music, good food and good conversation makes us all forget we are stuffed in like sardines ;-)

Steven ~ I am so glad you found a door chime to fit the nitch. It looks beautiful. What tune will yours play? My grandmother had one in her home, but it did not have a wonderful nitch like yours.

*The room is only 15 x 11 feet. But with enough wine, I can squeeze about eight people around this table. Good music, good food and good conversation makes us all forget we are stuffed in like sardines ;-)*

I loved that and can just see everyone feeling comfortable and relaxed in their lovely surroundings having a great time.

    Steven,
What a wonderful job you guys have done. It looks so welcoming and beautiful. Any guest would feel happy to be there. Is 7 tonight O.K.!!!!!

This is so funny...as I'm looking at the pics you posted I'm thinking, Gee that looks like the holy water font at our church. The ones on the top too???? Side door or chapel "dippers". Way to go to grab that fantastic marble. A friend of mine has a rectory table to seat about 12 all beautifully carved that was being thrown out.

One final thing...I live about 2 hrs. from the old Roseville pottery factory and have some great pieces. I miss the old place. It lasted a little longer than McCoy's but not by much. A lot of it pops up at garage and estate sales. Those in the know either grab it fast or charge an arm and a leg for it. Maybe this winter we should have a "inside treasures" posting!!

Happy Thanksgiving, Are you cooking at your house?

    Looking forward to triptophane overdose,
    georgeanne

Um, if Georgeanne is coming then so am I! We'll entertain you by arm wrestling for the drum stick. ; )

This post of yours reminds me of one of the main reasons we asked for our conversations forum in the first place. We were a bunch of cottage garden lovers who discovered we liked talking about the inside of our cottages as well as the outside. We should do this more often. : )

We're all going to Steven and Brian's for Thanksgiving? Sounds wonderful!

That is an amazing transformation. It is very pretty. I covet your crystal candelabra. With it's reflection I first thought it was a manora.

FlowerLady - and anyone else who might be interested in getting one of these chimes, I've included a linky at the bottom. This one just gives the classic ding-dong. But's it's a very rich tone, satisfying.

Georgeanne - I would love to host you (and Diana and the lovely Texas and anyone else)! Come on over. Bring extra drumsticks. Lucky you to live so close to the old Roseville factory. I've always had a thing for their pottery. Do you have a specific pattern you collect? The two pieces above the holy water font are Roseville wall pockets. Roseville has shot up in price within the last several years. It's really hard to find a deal. Rare are the finds for a buck at garage sales. But I keep looking.

Diana - I love when I get a glimpse of my fellow CG'ers interiors. I definitely encourage more of that. I'll wager we wouldn't see a lot of sleek, minimalist designs. We seem to be more the overstuffed comfy chair by the fire sort of people. Just a hunch.

Thanks Kathy - that candelabra gets so many compliments when it's in full blaze. I've never been a big fan of crystal, but this I really love.

Hey, I said get over hear with those drumsticks already!

I especially like how you painted the inside of your niche a lighter color to add dimension and frame your chime.

Door Chime niches (or nooks) were added to better built homes from the 1930s through the early 1960s. Today, many people are adding niches when remodeling or building a new home. ElectraChime has some information on niches on their website.

ElectraChime offers a variety of period correct and modern style door chimes that are perfect in chime niches or on a plain wall.

Your room looks really great, classy! But I hope you won't mind but I would like to suggest you changing the carpet to something brighter - of course not to bright cause will disappear when matching your wall. If you change your tablecloth the carpet might match it.
    Best regards!
