Stenocactus? Maybe coptonogonus?

No, this cactus is quite big, and it is about to bloom. If I read the botanical name I would immediately know it is that one, because I simply forgot it, but I knew it before. The spikes are as hard as metal.

I'm clueless as to it's name, but it's quite a lovely specimen. :)

OOOH! I had an epiphany!!! It's called Ferocactus wislizeni, also named "Fishhook barrel cactus"!

It doesn't look like Ferocactus wislizeni to me, it looks like Ferocactus latispinus, aka 'Devil's Tongue' or as you stated, 'Fish Hook Cactus.'

rinomanfroni I noticed that all these cactus are planted in your garden. Are they cold hardy? I'd love to have a cactus garden but thought the only hardy ones were the opuntias.

F. wislizeni is supposed to be hardy to Z8, I have a friend that grows in tin Z7a. I think she covers it with a pot filled with leaves when it gets really cold. How do you care for it in Your Z7

I'm seeing a new project for next spring, a cactus garden. I didn't realize there were so many cold hardy varieties.

It looks a bit like a Ferrocactus latispinus, especially if the flowers are purplish pink. They are also known to be winter blooming. I see cold hardiness ratings of 25F. Now if those flowers are orange or yellow, then it is F. wislizeni. My F wislizeni blooms in summer. The central fishhook needle it somewhat thinner on the F wislizeni. (God, when will I ever learn that spelling) . I would take your cactus in if this is a recent photo and you want to see the blooms or see it next year.

I just saw a cold hardiness rating of Z5 on the F wislizeni. HMMMMM, that might be a bit of a stretch.
