I have 18+ Salter daylilies in my garden. All of them have done well for me. I've heard that some of their CV's can be a bit twitchy in colder zones, but I haven't had any problems with the ones I have, and we had a run of really cold weather this winter. Every plant I've checked so far is showing active growth.

I have gotten rid of some Salter daylilies over the years. There are still 38 of Jeff's here and 41 of Elizabeth's. The vast majority of them do well. LEE PICKLES, EDITH SLIGER and ICING ON THE CAKE all took about 3 years to acclimate and were very slow increasing at first but now they all seem fine. MORT MORSS is one that is gorgeous, but it is one of the less vigorous here. It may get sent South soon. Some have left here because I just didn't consider them distinctive enough to keep. A couple of others I got rid of because quite honestly I was irked over some registration issues with them. ED BROWN won the Stout Medal and yet some who grow it in Northern climates declare it has hardiness issues.It is OK but not among the most vigorous here. Some which do very well and are particular favorites: From Jeff: WILD CHILD; MOONLIT MASQUERADE, SABINE BAUR;MANDALAY BAY MUSIC,HOLY GUACAMOLE, Elizabeth's BLUE OASIS, ELFIN ETCHING, PATCHWORK PUZZLE, CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION. Some of her blue eyed dips are not hardy in the North and others are fine. I'm sending BLUE HEART south this spring. IN THE NAVY took me three tries for it to live, but it finally seems to be doing well. So, it depends! Only 2 or 3 have left here for lack of vigor - most for other reasons!

I had Ed Brown and it never increased or bloomed, so I sent it away. Someone gave me another one as an extra. it promptly rotted. I don't keep up much with hybridizers. I do remember that I have Exotic Treasure, it grows well, blooms well and sets pods easily. I also have Holy Guacamole, it is smaller but pretty. It is settling in nicely, I got it last year.

I have not had much luck with Salter daylilies. Pure and Simple died, Larry Grace didn't increase at all and only blooms every other year, and Moonlit Masquerade took four years to settle in before having a good year last year. Edith Sliger, Antique Nouveau and Fairest of Them looked good in their first year but we will have to see how they look when established.

I had no idea I grew so many Salter daylilies -- 59 from Jeff Salter, and a couple of Elizabeth's.

Most do very well here, especially BERRY PATCH, CLOWN'S CABERET, BETTER THAN EVER, ENCHANTING ESMERELDA, ETERNAL WARRIOR and MALAYSIAN MARKETPLACE. I shipped out a few that just didn't appeal to me anymore.

I do have a few that are going to live elsewhere this year -- AMANDA'S INTRIGUE and TWILIGHT ILLUSION. They just haven't increased much for me.

Sorry to hear about Cimarron Rose because I have it on order. Chris, you don't know how much I rely on your choices in daylilies. Not only do I like almost all of the pictures you post but I figure if you can grow them in Michigan I can grow them in Illinois. I have ordered several daylilies because of your pictures. Thanks.

I've lost a lot of Liz Salter blue eyes and patterned eyes over the years. I don't seem to have that trouble with Jeff's larger daylilies. I'm saddened to see I've lost In The Navy again. Others by Liz that I've lost twice are Patchwork Puzzle, Elfin Etching, Pyewacket and Indian Weaving. Crystal Blue Persuasion has very few buds and has not increased well here.

I grow 60 of Jeff's and 12 of Liz's successfully. Why don't you tell us which ones you have in mind and we can report specifically on those.

hi juliany- i'm not a daylily expert..i live in illinois 5a. do you have 'elizabeth salter'? it's simple, not fancy by any means. a pretty bloom, striking color, lots of buds, long show and good grower for me.

Eternal Warrior, Larry Grace, Nordic Night, Westminster Lace, Chris Salter are ones I'm thinking about. BUT before I jump and buy any more I was researching which ones to avoid paying top $$ for. I don't mind taking a chance on plants but don't want to lose a chunk of change when the dl dies.

I do have some Salters but most are too new to tell how they will be until this year. These are the ones I do have:

NORDIC NIGHT is a great performer, and shouldn't cost more than $5.

PAINTING THE ROSES RED almost made my top performers list. It does well here in conditions that aren't optimal, so I assume you'll be happy with that one.

MOONLIT CARESS is a beautiful flower, but never increased much for me. I sent that one to live elsewhere.

I have Ed Brown. Summer 2008 was its 3rd year, branching and bud count was outstanding. It took 2 years to settle in but I mulched it for those two winters. Flower had no trouble opening. It maybe a slow increaser, will know more this spring. Mike.

I checked Ed Brown today. Some green showing but it looks pretty poor but then again, its only mid March.

Sorry to hear about Moonlit Caress. Will have to see how it does here. Should I order some BAP? ;-).
