old,interesting specimen of Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola

I found this specimen growing near downtown St. Petersburg, FL last weekend. It is a Juniperus virginiana [var. silicicola, Southern Red Cedar. This is an old specimen, at least 100 years old, probably older. It has that look of old conifers out West, like a Bristlecone Pine. I wonder if this tree is a remnant from the original forest.

    Holy Juniper! Nice one! We have some similar ones around here, but not that squat.

    Stunning! Until someone cuts it down to put in a parking lot. That's what would happen here.
