Thanks for the reminder!! I plan on turning every light on that I own!! Why??? Because I'm a stinking consevative PIG! (hehe!) Remember turn ON your lights between 8:30 and 9:30 this evening. Laugh because it's the only way you'll make it in this world.

That's the time that I am on line 'cause all day long I'm in the yard. I also do not bother with extremist, liberal political tools.
I al;so plan on turning all my outdoor and indoor lights on. Like my wife said,I pay for it.

puglvr, thanks for posting about Earth Hour. I WILL turn my lights off tonight because I am a believer in energy conservation and have become a believer in global warming. It's not good stewardship of the earth to be wasteful about anything, including energy resources.

Extremist? Lights out for 1 hour doesn't seem that extremist to me. This is a way to send a message to world leaders - it's a quiet, small message but it's a start.

The energy crisis - whether it's from global warming, global wars or global economic strife - will have an effect on liberals and conservatives alike. I don't see this as a political issue. We're all gardeners and because of that may have a greater connection to the earth than others. Let's make it about the Earth and not about politics.

    Non-political response:

If there are a large amount of energy consumers turning on their electrical devices all at once, it will create an enormous surge on power grids across the cities, states and US - even globally.

While the intent of the event is based on a perceived good (to spotlight energy waste), it will actually cause a power spike and a temporary 'higher' usage of energy. Exactly what it is trying to NOT accomplish.

Think back to the Florida winter of 1989 when the energy consumption went up due to people trying to stay warm and there were rolling black outs? Or, this winter in Northern states when power-outtages occured for the same reasons?

Electrical systems were not desgined for intermittant spikes in power. A continous power flow is actually more energy efficient.

This is similar to burning a bunch of trees in an effort to bring attention to air pollution and deforrestation.

I personally don't see the point or benefit so I will not choose to participate.

    I'm not changing anything,
    because nothing is changing.

The UN climate scientists were forced to admit that
there has been NO global warming for the past 12-13 years
and in fact, it has actually gotten cooler.

So just about everything we have heard for the past 12-13 years
has been flat out lies and distortions,
or twisted in a way to mis-lead.

I'm not turning out one single light until
China, Russia, India, Saudi, etc etc and on and on
    for over 130 other countries
    that the UN designated "developing"
and are totally exempt from doing anything about global warming and CO2
    are on board also.
China alone, produces more CO2 than we do.
China, combined with India, and Russia, produce many times more CO2
than we do, and they are all exempt.

If global warming was really a fact, and really a threat
    to the whole world

...there would not be one single country exempt.

Japan's leading scientist advisory board, recently announced that there is NO global warming also.

We have all the resources we need, right here
if we were not being lied to.

Actually , China will be participating tonight at 8:30 EST .

The Eiffel Tower in Paris , the Opera Center in Syndey , Australia , the Empire State Building and even casinos in Las Vegas will all turn off their lights tonight as a SYMBOL - a show of concern over world - wide environmental problems .

So - are these what you picture as the faces of " extremist, liberal political tools " ?

I state my opinion tyhat it is a liberal political tool,
together with the so call gobal warming and all that other lies. But this is all political from the start of this thread as we all know. This is a garden forum and I suggest
that we keep it gardenny or some heated debate will cause friction as it has happened before. I for instance am very passionate about my conservative views as I know that some of you are very passionate about your liberal views. So I suggest we do tonight what we want to do and discuss topics like this in the forum of GW called "hot topic".
Love you all liberal and conservative but let's not talk politics.
    Felix

If it's environmental then it seems like a good topic for our garden forum. We've had some good discussions here about climate changes and shared opinions about that. If, for you, it's strictly political then I can understand why you don't want to talk about it here.

    (((Love you too, Felix!)))

Then, actually, we should be treating global warming
    exactly like China

Dance around and wave our little global warming flags...
    ..turn our lights out

and not do another single thing about global warming

While at the same time, China is building over 500 new
coal plants in the next 10 years
that's a new coal plant every week
China is exempt from the Kyoto Protocol

Their demand for coal will increase
We have the largest reserve of coal in the world
We will just close our coal plants
We will then sell our coal to China, India, Russia, etc
    for them to burn

Exactly how does moving pollution/CO2 to another part of the world
    stop global warming?

    It doesn't

It just moves jobs to those countries
It will create the largest transfer of wealth in history.

I think we've already participated in Earth Hour for today...we have had our power knocked out twice by the severe weather up here, for over an hour each time

thats ok.. with the "smart grid" coming, Obama and his cronies will just turn off your power when you have used too much.

Global Warming? Ask the people in Minnesota and North Dakota about Global Warming. Notice that its no longer called Global Warming but Climate Change.

Beware when politicians use the word Change.

Thank you, puglvr, for the reminder. I turned mine off and enjoyed the candlelight.

BTW, I didn't find anything in your posting or link that smelled "political". I suppose there are those that "see" liberal politics around every corner and can't wait to get on their soap boxes. Sad.

Thanks to those for seeing the post as it was "intended". I HONESTLY never intended the post to be political or otherwise. I apologize if that is how some members took it...I am about as un-political as one gets...my motto is live and let live!

    PEACE to all...

You have nothing to apologize for.

It was cool this morning to see the news clips of the lights being turned off at major public places all over the world!

    Kate

    THANKS KATE!! Means a lot...

I really enjoyed seeing all the people...all over the world that participated!!

That river in ND crested at 42 ft back in the 1800's BEFORE gas powered engines were used, so where was the global warming excuse then? I believe in conserving energy and using our resources wisely, but I'm not letting liberals shove their global warming crap down my throat.

I left on the computer, the lights and watched tv during Earth Hour!

    Julie

Wow! How nice that puglvr1 posted this environmental topic to share - & how ridiculous & sad that the immediate responses were so negative & obnoxiously rude.

Could the contrast be any more apparent?

I did my part in conserving energy and improving the environment by turning off all the lights on my property and attending a wonderful play at the local Community Theater .
I was gone for over three hours and also helped support a local theater that has put on plays for over 50 years .
This week-end I went leaf bag snagging and mulched beds with oak leaves . I kept the black plastic bags to give to a B&B to reuse - again saving energy and keeping lots of good stuff out of the landfill .
Just doin' my part to live Green and support Earth Hour .

There is a "conversations" page if you want to promote your political agenda. This is "GARDEN" web. As Felix said: keep the topics "gardenny" and we'll all get along.

"& how ridiculous & sad that the immediate responses were so negative & obnoxiously rude."
You are narow mind in acussing those of us that responded diferently then you. "Ridiculous" is the games that you guys play,"Negative" are the ones scaring the pople that we will all drown due to the lies about gobal warming. It is your religion not ours.
"Abnoxiously rude" are those acussing and pointing figers at the rest of us that care about our environment and conservation just not the liberal political propaganda that are being shoved down our throats. You know how many time "gobal warming" crap we have to hear from the hipocrites,do gooder but the rest of us have to keep our opinion to ourselve? Well no more! Many of us had enough and are standing up for our opinions. Wether is ok with you or not. This forum belongs to all of us not to one or two members that may think that they are the self apointed chairperson for GW.
I told you we should stay "gardeny"LOL
    Felix

Once the phrase "global warming" comes into a conversation, there is no way on earth it isn't going to turn political.

This topic has gotten out of hand and really ought to go away before more damage is done, IMHO. The "event" in question is over, and either you participated in good faith or you didn't, in equally good faith. We should move on and get back to our garden topics.

Just my personal thoughts, of course. I certainly have no say-so about it, but I do have a strong aversion to seeing people get upset when we are really here to talk about other things.

You are absolutely correct manature. Let's talk garden.
    Felix

I agree that if this is going to be emotional and/or political we should move it to the Conversations page. So I started a thread there about it. Either go to Conversations or click on the link below.

I'm honestly interested to hear opinions (stated nicely, please!) on all sides of the climate theories. All opinions are welcome! Join me there and tell me what you think and why.

    I will refrain from commenting...

Just wanted to post a link for puglvr1 ...Puglvr, I do believe you did not have any agenda in your benign post ..in any case,
    Link you might enjoy

Let's just hope that this "movement" doesn't result in a mini baby boom. An increase in the population would result in the use even more of earth's resources.
