I loved it too - have it on TiVo and will keep it. I sat there afterwards and looked at one of my island beds and dreamed of how I could change it this fall and winter and add the layering effect....

I too loved this mornings program.I don't live too far from Buckhead...wonder if I could find Dans garden and wonder what he would say if I showed up and begged him to let me just roam in it for a few days..lol
Seriously,I too love the way he transformed his property and I too sit and wondered if I could do something like that.I wish I had taped it.One of the best I've seen yet.

what days and times are this show on..what channel? Is it just called Erica's? Thanks in advance..it sounds like I want to watch it soon!

I Tivo'ed this and have already watched it 3 times. I absolutely love his garden. It's so lush and with all the boxwood and evergreen it would look beautiful any time of year.

Keesha, it's called The Gardener's Diary, Erica Glasener is the host and it's on HGTV on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:00 am. I also enjoyed the episode featuring the iris garden of Carol Warner. It's totally different from Dan Cleveland's garden, as it's on a large property and she has room for big trees and wide open lawns.

mizjoy, I sent you an e-mail

    GGG, thanks for the article.

I also really enjoyed the show yesterday, I am really glad that HGTV added more gardening shows during the week, even though there is Rebeccas garden everyday I swear that they just take bits and pieces of different segments they take and put it together into one show, I see the same thing on morrel mushrooms(spelling) in like 5 different episodes, I am not sure if they still make the show, I just wish the shows segments would have to do with each other, I also love the edition of Gardening by the yard in the am too, I LOVE that show. My favorite episode of Gardeners diary was the one with the italian women who moved here from italy and had her own little farm and gallery that burnt down, she reminds me of my grandmother, I guess thats why I liked it so much.

I almost forgot, I dont really like the host of The Gardener's Diary (Erica Glasener, I just find her a little cold, and boring, she really doesnt seem to have a personality, I dont know just my opinion.

Erica is a little dry but I like the show because of the gardens and the gardeners. Makes for a better show imho than a spunky host with boring gardens.

I'm glad they brought this show back, too, even though they are all repeats. It's been long enough since they were last aired that I've forgotten most of them. Not that I need a long period of time to forget things these days. : )

Dan's gardens were divine! I tivo the program and have kept that one to watch again - maybe 3Xs like mizjoy. ; )

And I like Erica's personality. I've always found it refreshing in this day of ultra loud tv hosts and all the equally loud noise that accompany them. I'm also a HUGE fan of Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa (foodnetwork), another soft spoken hostess. I think they live by one of my favorite credos - if you can't say something nice at least be subtle.

The episode of Gardener's Diary with Dan Cleveland was excellent (GGG thanks for the link!). GD seems to appeal to the more experienced gardener who already knows the basics, while the other programs like Rebecca's and Gardening by the Yard are more fundamental and appeal to those who enjoy decorating and arts and crafts ideas. I wish there were MORE gardening shows period. I'd watch them all.

(Am I the only one who has developed an INTENSE dislike for Paul James and the closeups of his nostril hairs?)

no way, i love the gardner guy! He is kind of goofy but I like the content.

I love the episode with Dan Cleveland's garden! It is one of my very favorites. I have seen it before but taped it on Thursday. My all time favorite is the guy from Alabama who had all kinds of water through his garden, a castle ruin with a door to a play area for his grandkids and stepping stones across water. It was too wonderful! Unfortunately I lost the episode when my DVR went on the fritz before I had transferred it to tape. I really hope they show that one again. Maybe I will have to put in a special request.

My three favorite GD shows all featured men. Two where gardeners from the Atlanta area. One was particular, one was a cottage gardener...the other was a gardener called Dirt from (I think) Mississippi. Dirt also has a gardening radio show with Felder Rushing. Dirt, who was transplanted for a time to my hometown of Toronto moved back to care for his mamma and her southern venacular garden. He's right by the railroad tracks and still lives in mamma's house and tends her gardens. His is a junk garden filled with crazy things and lots of "cemetery" roses. Dirt is real people, and the show he did with Erica is precious. She is down to earth and quiet. He is down to earth and crazy in that fun loving oddball "southern crazy" sort of way. A real character. Their personalities just "clicked"!
Although Dan Cleveland's garden is OK, it's not my cup of tea. It's more of a traditional "Atlanta" style of garden. Not that there is a single thing wrong with that. I am actually jealous of winter greenery (which I don't have much of out front). But I LOVE flashy summer color, and "Atlanta" gardens are more 4 seasons of various shades of green than splashes of psychedelic freakouts dotting the landscape. My garden would probably give poor Dan the horrors!!

I LOVED that show with 'Dirt' and I do hope they show it again. He had such a junky, loveable garden. I remember one from way back with a little old lady called "Weezy" (I think). The hardscaping she did the her gardens was so neat - again not at all formal and let mother nature dictate alot of the garden much like 'Dirt' did. They were both an inspiration for me - if they could do all that at their ages then I could too....

For those who do not have tivo you don't know what you are missing! You can save your shows while you are out in the garden. You punch in the shows you want to tape (once)and you can watch them over and over and if you just want to see the end result of say,,,landscapers challenge you hit the button and pow ,,,it is done! You save so much time with NO commercials. If you miss something because that is the very minute your DH decides to punch the noisy ice maker you just back it up.I have it figured out.On HGTV there are 5 sponsors per break.
I need the AM to volunteer in the ext. office or go out and work the garden and watch the birds and butterflies .Now I can watch those shows after dark or at noon when it is dangerously HOT.
Gardeners Diary and P.Allen Smith are good before bed as they relax me. My hubby doesnt like Paul James but I am converting him. I read his bio and am impressed. Nice to know someone else gets as silly and giddy over compost and worms as me!
    Besides.
As I tell my balding Hubby,
Your not losing your hair ,
    its just coming
    out your ears and nostrils!

WOW, WHAT A GARDEN THIS MORNING!!! (episode 1004)

Trudi Temple's garden is just breathtaking, and in ZONE 5 yet! How I wish I had it on tape! Truly inspiring!

I just sat there in awe of Trudi's garden today. How the heck does she keep all that going - she is not young but very energetic. I wonder if she has help or does it all her self. She seems so very content even tho she lost her husband and lives alone now. I was very impressed with todays show.......

Loved today's show, as well. And I thought of all you zone 5ers and wondered if your gardening wheels were spinning. So many wonderful ideas and inspiration, for all of us. Loved her use of rock. We use a lot of it, too, and I'm forever adding more. I like the way she mixed in all the conifers, as well. I'm going to get more of those this fall since they do so well here.

It wouldn't surprise me if she did most of the work herself. She appeared to be in good physical and mental health. She reminded me of a German woman I met when I delivered for Meals on Wheels. She was 80 at the time and outside, on a ladder, painting her home when I first drove up. She's now 95 and still does all her own cooking and cleaning, plus has a nice garden. And she has 3 huge dogs that will "take care of you" if she can't. ; )
