Ice Storm ravages...

I am so hopeful that the folks affected by this dangerous storm will be able to seek safe shelter . The dangers are so great. My heart goes out to all the gardeners from the forum and everyone affected. We will all want to hear from you when you are back on-line. c

This is crazy. We've never had so much freezing rain/sleet/ice in one season, let alone one week. SO dangerous. I know lots of people have been hit much worse than we have, though. Makes you just want to stay home and hide from the world for awhile.

Echoing your thoughts, Caroline and MrMorton.

Last weeks snow storm only brushed us here, but brought ice instead. More ice the past few days. Again tonight and more on the way in the days ahead. Give me snow any day (and I have been in some doozie snow storms). We had a late fall and many trees are still full of leaves. Makes me cringe to think of the sight of hundreds (thousands?) of broken trees last year as I drove through Tracy's neighborhood.
All in all we've been VERY LUCKY so far that the power has stayed on. Feeling very concerned for those less fortunate.

Sending warm thoughts and hugs to all,
    Patti

When we lived in Chapel Hill NC in the 70's we had a couple ice storms. I remember the loblolly pines beeeeending way over so the tops touched the ground. Some times they would SNAP and the sound was horrific. It was the most scary beautiful sight. I was saddened to see how many have lost their lives already due to these storms. Please stay home and safe. c

We had it last year. I feel for you all. It was miserable. Six days without electricity or heat. Those conditions are so dangerous much less if you have to try and get out in those conditions. Makes you realize what we take for granted.

I am so sympathetic with you all with ice storms. We live in sw missouri that was so devastated last January. Our entire yard looked like a war zone. The trees still are pathetic. We were without power for 11 days. This time we were fortunate with just icing for one day and no power loss. In fact it warmed up during the night and melted it off the trees and today we cut down the second half of my favorite River Birch (first half went after January storm) because yesterday it was touching the power line coming to the house.....can't have that! Now it is raining again and they are saying we could get some icing......

After the January storm, we put in an automatic propane powered generator that can run the entire farm....I told DH I was getting too old to go through another disaster like that. We should be in good shape if another outage hits us.

You do realize it isn't even winter yet..........

I'm watching the CBS News -- 1" thick ice! I've never heard of such. We've gotten encased trees and roads, but nothing like that.

Please stay inside, warm and safe. I realize many are without power and won't be able to check back in for awhile.

Having survived the ice storm of 1998, I feel for you folks! It was awful being with out electricity for soooooo long, thank God I had propane heat and stove and the septic system worked on gravity. It was just awful having my trees snap off, they sounded just like shotguns for days. Hmmm, I have lots of video, I ought to get them out.....

Take care or yourselves and your neighbors and take pix too...

What terrible weather! I just heard on the news that some homes would not have power restored until after Christmas.

    Stay warm and safe.

I can't even imagine being without power for that long. I've never been without for more than a few hours. What is the extent of the storm (geographically)? I have cousins in Indiana.

We have been very fortunate where we live, the closest I have ever come to an ice storm one year before the leaves dropped on our flowering cherry we woke up to bent limbs, branches and leaves covered in ice. Although nothing cracked or broke the limbs, they were bent permanently. The limbs and branches never did straighten up.
Being without power in times like this is simply devastating. Hopefully everyone is safe and can keep warm, that they can get through this without lasting damage.
I think this has been the weirdest weather year for all of us to date.
