... and just like that, they're gone

I was a day late spraying Lquid Fence. The deer took out 90% of my daylilys last night. Hopefully I will still see a few blooms. Glad I can still look at everyone elses photos though.

Alexa, you have our sympathy. We had the same thing happen so much that it drove us to install the electric fences. I know this is not the solution for everyone, but we've never had a problem since then. Hope there are some blooms left for you to enjoy. Avedon

Oh no. I don't know how you can stand it. Wait all year fopr those lovely blooms and to have them just wiped out like that. I would go nuts. I think Avedon has an excellent solution with the electric fence.

OHHHHHHHH! I'm so sorry. I was sick with losing 3 plants to moles this year. I can't imagine. I don't know how many you lost but you have my sincere sorrow. Blessing to you, Mona

Geezel Peezel. I grew up with the "Bambi" movie, but they never showed Bambi eating someones daylilies or roses. That just plain stinks....Maryl

So sorry for your lose. How heartbreaking! I hope the daylilies gave those deer wicked bad gas pains.

Oh no!! 90%. I am very sorry!

Those deer are so cute but they are such pains! How sad to loose all your buds after having waited all year for daylily season.

I am so sorry. I know the heartbreak firsthand. I grow hundreds of roses in addition to lilies and daylilies (perennials as well) and because I live in a wooded, rural area the deer are always in my gardens. For YEARS I endured the heartbreak of my beautiful flowers getting wiped out. In desperation I bought some motion-sensor deer repellents that spray water when they detect movement. I had to buy several (and they're about $60 each) but they have kept the deer away 100% for two years straight. They are fed water through your garden hose hookup and when a deer walks in its path the sensor will detect their movement, spray water quite a long distance and it makes a machine gun like sound as it spins and sprays which scares the daylights out of the deer. It also works on keeping the unwanted door-to-door solicitors away, too...haha. We have too much land and too many gardens to install fencing and other methods weren't working. You can shut them off when you want. Each one will spray in different directions for quite a distance.
Just last night when I was driving down our road there were 2 deer in my neighbor's yard eating up HIS plants. When I woke up this morning all my plants were untouched, even though there are hundreds of roses in full bloom and daylilies and lilies covered in buds.

I am truly sorry about your problems with deer. It is immensely frustrating and depressing, and some people give up gardening altogether because of it. Even though these deer alarms are a bit costly, they have been worth it to me since I have invested so much already in my flowers and what good is my investment if I never get to see them bloom?

I'm so sorry to hear about your daylilies. I know it's devestating. Deer are getting to be a problem almost everywhere it seems. The deer wiped out my mother's daylilies a couple of years ago and we had to install deer fence in the front yard. So far it's working.

I'm so sorry, Alexa. How awful!!! I do hope you get to see some rebloom. I don't have deer since I'm in the city. I have squirrels instead. They do damage but they don't wipe out 90% of my flowers in a night. I hope you find a remedy for them.

    Thanks everyone.

I am definitely going to look into the motion sprinkler/sprayers, that sounds like it just may work for me. I should have mentioned, I back to a 1500 acre state park, so it isn't like I don't know the risks. I am usually pretty diligent about the Liquid Fence and I let it slip this time.

Fortunately, I still have a few blooming (and some photos from last week I hadn't uploaded yet) so I can certainly share those. I am really annoyed that they ate a bunch of seed pods too though, LOL! Oh well, that gives me an opportunity to go over to the lily auction and get some from crosses I can't make here.

Thanks for all the kind words, and if you DO use Liquid Fence, go spray now!
