Fall sowing of most herbs is always best on the Gulf Coast. I just planted dill, fennel, and chicory this morning. About the first of October, I'll sow all the other cool weather herbs. I've just cut back all the thymes that survived the summer and began ferilizing them for winter growth. This is also a perfect time in this area to take cuttings of lavender and rosemary. I have best success in rooting almost anything by using perlite.

Thanks so much I was just about to post to see if you could start herb seeds now.I'm new at growing herbs planted some seeds in the spring but did not have any luck I guess it was to warm what can I start now need help thanks Jim

I plant them in empty soda bottles, like mini greenhouses, because I found that if I direct sow the slugs always get them.... :o( but I think most plants are happiest if they get to germinate when they darn feel like it. :o)

Westelle, what a great site! Good growers won't usually offer plants when it's too late to ship and plant in most Zones.

If anyone is really itching to plant, try anything that behaves like lettace or other cool weather, quick germinating crop, but use containers. They'll stay warmer, and you can regulate moisture and light.
Lemon Basil is particularly wonderful. If it starts to get cold, just throw a plastic shopping bag over the top of the plants. I sometimes mix in a seeds of romaine and spinach and have ready to eat salad in about 4 weeks.
