Spring is the time for... new Hoyas!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to ask which hoyas you'll be getting in spring. For me I'll be getting cuttings of pub. Red Buttons and Royal Hawaiian Purple, australis spp. tenuipes,

and multiflora. I'll be looking for shepherdii as well.

So, what's on your want list that you'll soon aquire?

I've got quite a long wish list of hoyas that I submitted to David Liddle as of July of last year. Now it's just a matter of finding out if his wife Iris Marie will be continuing the hoya sales. The new Liddle catalog always hits the press sometime in January so i'm guessing that we shall soon know.

I only have room for four more. I'm getting H. Meliflua, H. Meliflua ssp. fraterna and H. Merrillii. I'm waiting to see if there are any new offers at Gardino's in the Spring before selecting the fourth...

I think the only hoyas I'll be getting this year are ones I already have. To make fuller plants. I'd like to get more polyneura, multiflora, and lucanosa. My collection grew so much last year (from 3 to over 30) I don't *need* any more but what I *need* and what I want are two different things. So I'm sure this plan will change.

I'll be getting villosa and daysantha for sure (thanks to two of the nice ladies here who have offered them in trade this spring!=o) I'd still like to get my hands on dennisii, but I won't try it from Australia again because the leaves were too thin to survive the trip. Griffithii looks different than most of my others, so I may look for that one. I've wanted microphylla for a long time, but I haven't seen it available anywhere (maybe I could get that one from Australia if Iris Marie plans to send out this year...)

I've really got to be very selective this year, though, because when the ones I got last year take off this spring, I'm going to be up to my eyeballs in plants!

Denise, just a heads up on the microphylla, I have tried to get it from DL in the past and he told me that he does not have the plant in his collection.

I have a plant that I got out of Sweden but it'll probably be a hundred years before it's big enough to cut!!! Also, it is not by any means an easy hoya to grow.

I usually have no problems at all growing any hoya, even those that others seem to have issues with, but microphylla proved to be QUITE the challenge!!!! So much so that I have sent my plant to another hoya friend who is successfully growing this species,in hopes that she can get my plant to become large and stable enough for me to feel comfortable growing it. She's supposed to be sending the plant back to me in early spring and I get frequent updates on it!!

I'm not sure what I'm going to get. I'm going to try and stop by Gardino's this week. Maybe today if Andrea says it's ok.

You are so lucky to live by Gardino's Karyn!!! I'm green with envy...

I don't live near Gardino's. I just happen to be in West Palm Beach now and that's very close to Delray Beach. I went to Gardino's today. Andrea's husband took a couple hours and walked me thru everything. They really have an amazing collection of plants. I only picked up a few hoyas because of everything else I got but they had soooo many that I would have loved. There's a number of really interesting ones that they don't list on their site. It was really nice of them to take so much time to give me a tour and answer so many questions. I wish that I could have bought so many more plants but I'm going to have to pack them up to go on the plane. Normally I mail plants home that I buy here but it's too cold back home to mail anything. If you are in the Delray area it's definitely worth a trip to their nursery. I got:

    Hoya retusa
    Hoya imperialis
    Hoya macrophylla variegata
    Hydinophytum formacarium
    Vietnamese gardenia
    Burbidge nitida
    Pseudobombax ellipticum (pink grafted)
    Strophanths gratis
    Griffinia sp.
    Hippeastrum reticulatum striatifolium
    Gardenia carinata
    Gloxinia chic

The H. retusa is really unusual looking.

Oh, I so need to prioritize what I want at this point! At the top of my list are:
    lambii
    inflata
    hypolasia
variegated multiflora (mine is totally struggling!) griffithii (the golden one, not the white one)
    benguentensis
    megalantha
    chlorantha var tutuilensis
    telosmoides
    thomsonii
    vitiensis yellow form
    waymanaie

I don't know why I keep fooling myself into thinking I'm going to downsize! Am working on trading or giving away the ones I feel I can live without though!

Sure hope there will be another David/Iris Liddle Order!

Regina, yeah I have that problem, too! I wanted to add that I'll also be getting some Pink Silver cuttings. I can't get too much more since I'm running out of room! Multiflora and PS are going to friends of mine. I also wanted to look for obscura.

    I have a very short list this spring(space problems,lol)
    H. Callistophylla and H. Australis. I just hope I get some blooms from some of my hoyas that's never bloomed before.

That's quite a list you guys! Great choices...I really hope you guys get the ones you want. Happy hoya hunting!

Well let's see, my wish list is rather long, but these are the ones I am really wanting

    megalantha
    praetorii
    inflata
    dennisii
    campanulata
    imperialis 'alba'
    telosmoides

Like I said the list goes on and on, but these are my goal for 2010, anything else is great.

    Dee

Oops correction...meant to say Australis Lisa (not Australis)!

    Nice list Dee!

My wish list is going to be very limited due to space restrictions...but, I've already ordered and paid for the following...I'm especially interested in the first one:
    1. H. sp. flat stem X two
    2. H. blashernaezii
    3. H. inflata x two
    4. H. Kast

Knowing me, I'll add 100 more to the list!! LOL I love the names of the hoyas mentioned above....some real dandies!! Puglvr...I got Aus. Lisa a couple months ago...on the small side, but an awesome and carefree plant...very pretty and unlike most other hoyas. Best wishes, Patrick

Nice list Patrick!! You have some rare ones on there.
Thanks for the tips on the Australis Lisa...I am def. getting it for the leaves...I don't even mind if it doesn't bloom. I saw this awesome picture on the web that made me decide I had to have one,lol...

Here is a link that might be useful: Found this Picture from the web...

Oh Patrick your going to love the Blaschernaezii. I added that one to my collection just resently as a small starter plant.

Pug, my favorite nursery has callistophylla so when I get over that way I'll be picking one up ;)

Pug, where did you find H. Australis Lisa? I saw that too on a website and thought it would be very difficult to find.

    Tish

Tish, I haven't gotten one yet, its on my "must have" wish list for spring. I've been looking for one and trying to find someone that might have a small rooted cutting or starter plant. Wish me luck!

Oh, I thought you had scoped out a nursery that carried it. Good luck on your hunt Pug!!!

Tish and Puglvr...I purchased my Aus. Lisa on Ebay...from Fatplant. I don't recall there being alot of bidding on this plant. It's a lovely plant...dark splotches near the margin and lime green in the center. Mine is finally showing growth...the new vine is a dark red colour, which I'm sure will disappear once the vine gets growing. I kinda prefer the plant just as it is...not with the vines...very attractive! Keep your eyes open on Ebay once Fatplant starts selling again! Best wishes! Patrick

Thank you so much Patrick!!! When do you think he'll start? March?

My wish list of plants I plan to get this year:

    australis ssp. Tenuipes
    cagayanensis
    calycina
    villosa

    Maybes:

    benguetensis
    chlorantha
    CFM-8
    lambii
    lobbii
    patella

Wishing and wanting but ain't happening anytime soon:

    Eriostemmas
    microphylla
    tjadasmalangensis

I've definitely forgotten some, not feeling organized enough at the moment to suss them out. How my wish list pans out will be determined greatly by the amount of space I decide I have. I'm going to be rearranging furniture and planning on downsizing my plant collection very soon so I can grow things that I really enjoy, vs the ones that are just ok.

Thanks Patrick for the heads up.
Tish, March or April if I had to guess?

Quinn, nice hoya list, good luck with your wish list.
