Giving Sebright Gardens a Try...

Looks like a good place, nicely-reviewed, so let's find out. I put in a smallish 'tester' order. I requested

SWEET STANDARD
SEA MONSTER
CURLS
VENTRICOSA AUREOMARGINATA
VENTRICOSA AUREOMACULATA

I won 500 bucks on a two-dollar lotto scratcher my daughter got me for my birthday, (Winner winner chicken dinner!!!) so naturally I'm spending it all on garden plants and supplies, namely hostas and topsoil. : ) I'll post some pics when they get here in May.

Cheers,
Don B.

wonderful way to spend it and maybe some left for chicken dinner too

Congratulations on your win, you couldn't spend it on anything better could you. I have Curls from my fransen's clearance order, can't wait to see her wake up, from pics on the library she looks beautifully rippley.

Does Curls have a lighter edge? It's hard to tell from the HL photos.

    bk

No, she is a plain greenie, pic 2 on HL is a bit decieving, I don't know if thats sun scorch if or its the wrong hosta.

I placed a Sebright order also, Don. My first. Iam not on computer where my hosta orders are, so wait for later today I might feel up to going in there and starting it up.

What I purchased was a long sleey tee shirt which has on it

There is no such thing as too many hosta.

With that I figure the DH is on notice of THINGS TO COME.

I am surprised your order doesn't include Dixie CHICK, lol.

    You mean moi?
Esther, I have both Dixie Chick and Dixie Chickadee on order. From LOTG and Green Mountain respectively. Both originated with the joker of the hosta deck, Tony Avent.

Incidentally, Don, I got a call a short while ago which propelled me out of bed and to my computer. It was from Sebright Gardens, no less! I am so gladd that Kirk Hansen called, because I THOUGHT I had ordered these plants, but apparently only left a dazed phone message about wanting to do an order. Anyway, plowing through the primordial soup of my brain, I sorted in the HostaFinder to the spot where I'd written down my proposed order a week ago. Of course I thought of two others which I hoped perchance they'd have even though not listed in the catalog, and oh yea, there they were. So here is MY order, safely tucked into the DONE folder, soon to be added to ACQUISITIONS.

    Dee's Golden Jewel
Daisy Doolittle (a small listed as F by DonR)
    Margie's Angel
    On The Edge
Sweet Thing (F sport of SoSweet--pencil thin cream margin)
    Seventh Heaven (F )
    Wyle Green Cream

I was pleased to chat for a few minutes about their plants and shipping policy. Kirk said they usually ship in May, their plants are mature, they like them to be hardened off so they can endure the journey. How and when they ship is up to them, of course, and I'll be happy to see them.

Especially am I looking forward to Seventh Heaven. You know it is a cross of 'Kevin Vaughan' x plantaginea, and it is a fertile breeder? You'll know it as the sporty mama of Diana Remembered. I am so looking forward to a fragrant hosta that gives up its fertility and doesn't sit there like a virgin queen!

And when I talked to Kirk, I thought his accent was just like Gary's over at Naylor....not that far away geographically, you know. Totally different nurseries though, from the Naylor well grown out TCs to the mature plants of Sebright. We'll have something to chat about, Don-me-boyo, when the orders arrive! But at least fate stepped in to make sure I did place my order. Jolly well that it did.Or I would not have Seventh Heaven!

"Virgin Queen"? What a great name for a Hosta for the queen series.(I am collecting them now! you,'know Dancing Queen, Queen of the Seas,Dream Queen etc!) And you all are a bunch of enablers.I keep finding new hosta that are 'must haves'.MY problem is not space, I have that, I also have arthritis, Knees and ankles!!! Bummer! And my yard is an old gravel pit!! Try digging in that!?!? We never dug a fresh bed with a shovel, Lew had a six foot digging bar!! Try using that when you are under 5 feet tall! But I have "discovered" POTS and they are good for alot of reasons : portable NO digging holes and No mole invasions.( Have you ever really gotten a close look at a mole? They are really rather surprising. Lew caught one in a trap once and showed it to me! Black silky fur fat little " pink hands" with long nails, and no eyes ) But I digress, what I am getting at is I keep finding new Hosta and this spring is just getting started, at least here in the Willamette Valley!! And don't even get me started on Heuchera!!!!! Jeeze, does this craziness never end????

Rosie, bless your heart, you garden despite it all.

Indeed Virgin Queen should make a great addition to your set.
I hope to get a unique dark jungle green to name Zulu Queen...never can have too many Zzzz.

Mocc, I don't know if you recall me saying this last year, but I did find a very streaked example of a 'Hoosier Harmony' Just a lil tiny thing. I wasn't kidding when I said that if the plant keeps growing, stays unstable and streaked, AND has more than two eyes this season, I will send you a piece of 'Hoosier Daddy' (My garden name for it). This would be a 'Thank You' plant, because from the first day I joined this forum, you were showing me all these fragrant hostas I had no idea even existed. Your friendly encouragement was one of the initial pleasent interactions I had here, and I've felt welcome and at home ever since...Let's hope it stays streaky, and grows fast; Then we both can get nice pieces of it... :)

    Cheers, Cap'n Hogan,
    Don B.

Don, that is a lovely testament to Mocc. I share the same sentiment and I hope Hoosier Daddy keeps growing...handsome lad that it is!

Hope you are feeling ship shape very soon, Mocc. The garden is the place to be, out in the sunshine...get yourself into a recliner/chaise and gaze upon your garden. :-)

Awwwwwww . . . Don you are a sweetie! Your DW is some lucky gal!

Isn't that nice that you won $500 . . . perhaps your best birthday gift this year?

Don, you are such a good guy, I am speechless. And pleased. I gotta tell you, Hoosier Daddy is a fantastic name. Reminds me of days on the bayou of south Louisiana, where a common question was "Who s your mama, can you make a roux?" I even have a cookbook by that name, so you know it is an expression heard a lot. I will be both flattered and pleased to have such a lovely memory added to my garden.

After seeing the doc, I have meds to take, even antibiotics which is not routine scrip, and I am back in bed, napping between chapters of Diana Grenfells New HOSTA Ency. from the library. Dreaming of HOSTA. Thanks, sweetie.

It would be my pleasure, Mocc. I don't think it's such a rare thing, this streaked 'Hoosier Harmony'. I was very excited to find a real live STREAKER in that tray of 50-75 little 'normal 'Hoosier Harmony; It stood out to me like it was on FIRE! I think it was Phil/Hosta Freak who had one, but it reverted to normal eventually. However, please double-check me on this, but I could swear that the fourth photo down, the bottom pic in the hosta library, taken by Dirk Dupre, is a pic of a streaked HH. Looks pretty darn cool, though; hope the one in my garden holds it's streaks. Fingers crossed. Hope your meds are kicking in and you start to feel better real quick.

Don, I checked Dirk Dupre's picture in the HL and it looks streaked to me as well. His plant seems to have held the streaks, which are green in that case. Yes indeed, it would be exciting to have a little streaker running through the garden.

I may have to put up a sign, "Watch for Streakers!" Only a hosta fancier would know what it means.
