Hawaiian Wax Plant ( Hoya) has no fragrance

I hope I am in the right place for posting this as I am new.

I purchased a start many many years ago of a Hawaiian Wax Plant ( Hoya) , it blooms beautifully but has no fragrance. When I was buying the start the bloom that they had out smelled but mine has never smelled. Is there something I need to add to the soil?

Thank you, I appreciate any help you might be able to give me.

Sincerely,

    Hi Auburn,

No, sometimes they're more fragrant than others. I notice mine aren't nearly as fragrant this year as they have been in past years - none of them (except Hoya lacunosa, that is...) I'm never sure if it's something I'm doing different, something different about the environment (more sun, less sun, hotter, cooler, etc...) Some years, the fragrance on many is so powerful it fills half my house. This year, I have to put my nose right on the flower to smell them. Don't worry about it - it will likely be more fragrant next year, or maybe even the next flower!

Also, it depends on the type of hoya you have. Some smell good, some smell bad, and some have no smell at all. However if the parent plant had a smell, I would think it is more of an environment issue like Denise suggests.
One thing you can try is smelling in the late evening or early in the morning as hoyas strongest smells happen then. There is therory that they are pollinated by some moth or night insect.
The flower also is strongest when it first opens and gets fainter as the days go on.

Welcome Auburn, it would help if you could post a picture of your hoya to help identify it as there is not a "Hawaiian Wax Plant " official name for a hoya. there are a lot of knowledgable folks on the site that can help you but they need to see a photo and even then it's difficult.

Hoyas are not native to Hawaii thus the name you've given seems odd. There is a Hoya pubicalyx cultivar named 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' and that is the only one I know of with anything Hawaii in its name. Note that some Hoyas only will get fragrant towards the evening.

Hi and thank you all for your advice. I do not know where to go to download a photo of the Hoya plant onto the site, can someone tell me were I can find that.
I am sorry about calling it a Hawaiian wax plant as that was what was on the card the lady gave me when I bought the start. She wouldn't even tell me how to get other starts but I finally found out it is as easy as just sticking the clipping in dirt... wow they grow beautifully.
My plant never had a fragrance but as I said the one in the jar she showed me sure did, oh it was wonderful so I am a bit disappointed but the flower is so pretty that makes it all worth while. So easy to take care of too. I see several plants that are probably the one I have when I look through the photos but if I find out how to download it I will put it on the website.
Thank you all again, just wanted to make sure that I had it planted right and it didn't need something special.
