That's crazy ... personally, I'm not so taken with teeth. It's now what "everyone" is working on ... I hate conforming! LOL!

wow. thats mighty big price for one fan, would be big price even if it had a dozen fans to me.but,It IS pretty.

I have seen it and could hardly believe it. I'm with Pam, I wish the hybridizers would not all jump on the "teeth" bandwagon. Avedon

INSANITY!! You know how much it would "bite" if that single fan "bit" the dust!?!

holy horns is right. did you notice that the winning bidder has bid 15 times on this one item? he must really want this one bad to bid so high on it. must be nice to have that kind of money to put on just one item. I could never do that. although I have been bidding on the cheap seed auctions recently. after months of giving up e~bay I'm back in it again, all because a friend suggested I bid on a laptop battery. e~bay is hard to leave once you get started, & it's really easy to get carried away on bidding if you let yourself. good luck to all who bid on e~bay.

Outside of some pictures I've seen of Bass Gibson, teeth aren't that much my thing. But I must say the 2 toned effect with the teeth in the pictures is pretty eye catching. I'd have to see some garden pictures taken of it in mid to late afternoon to see how it does under southern growing conditions before I'd buy it - even for $20.00. I'm sure it's a hybridizing thing to bid that much $$ for a daylily. An investment, not an ornament.....Maryl

I agree with maryl. The color is nice but I'm not a fan of the teeth. IMHO, the teeth ruin the look of this daylily. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I like the older (1980's) daylilies. I have an older book by Munson and there are some real beauties in there. Marg

I'm on the fence with teeth on daylilies. I'm not a big fan of the look but if something was unique and caught my eye, I might buy it.

John should be very pleased with his auction selling price. I know I would be ;-).

I don't really have a comment about the price but I love the heading. Holy Horns!! Cracked me up!!! It is quite pricey though for me!! Judy

YIKES, and it is still moving up. Not so crazy either about teeth. Not so sure I even like the daylily so much, it certainly is different.

Teeth are fine and all, but what I want to know is how many toothy daylilies have to be registered before people will start giving them normal names instead of naming them all for monsters and biting and horns and icicles?

Just checked the bidding to see if someone will push this over the $600 mark. Tune in tomorrow!!! Avedon

I'm not so intrigued by teeth either but I would use them to move beyond what they are today. I envision quilled daylilies like quilled chrysanthemums will show up one day and the current trend of breeding for "teeth" will eventually lead there.

It's obvious that those bidding so high are not the average collector. Most are probably hybridizing. The only bidder whose name I recognize is Nams. I just bought some seeds from her a couple weeks ago. I know she's a hybridizer.

I agree with you all though, too rich for my blood even to hybridize with. I'd have to sell a lot of high priced plants to recoupe that high price.

It's now up to 595.46 still going to the same bidder. It is a pretty different looking flower but way to expensive for me. I hope it does well for the highest bidder can you imagine paying this amount and then having it die YIKES.
    Linda

If anyone gets bored just call into Suze Orman's show and tell her you want to spend $600 on a flower. Before you can even explain it's an investment for hybridizing, her head will start spinning around like Beetle Juice. lol

It could be a one eyed one horned flying purple people eater and I still wouldnt pay that much for a daylily !

There is obsession and then there is ridiculous ! So this person pays 600 plus dollars for one fan and then what . Now he/she has it but will it bring back in what they paid for it ? I highly doubt it . Will it produce some magnificent unusal offspring I doubt it . Even if it did , read the posts . The majority of people would not pay that much for a plant myself included

    Signet -
I think the winner can easily get the investment back. I've seen many other different seed crosses go for $100 or so and some Gaskin seedlings for the same.

Benz says that he has seen tentacles up to 2" on BH. Another auction talks about tendrils. What the difference between a tendril and tentacle?

The what ever you want to call them are impressive but the color doesn't do much for me. For the $600 plus dollars you could buy a bunch of nice plants or a couple of nice conversions.

    Sold at $780.35

    Yikes!!!! Wow!!
It is pretty, but I have to agree that I would be beyond devastated if it didn't make it through the winter.
I was trying to come up with names for toothy or tentacled edges that didn't involve monsters, but all I could think of was
    My Perky Porcupine
    or
    Rototilling Ringleader

Too funny, Concrete Cracker. My choice is Octopus Garden and Austable Rate Mortgage (long arms)

Maryotts has gift certificates now. Can you imagine how big the box would be if you had a GC for $780?

My favorite named dl is "Clowns in Washington."

Ha, I like the suggestions (especially the mortgage, very clever). I was thinking maybe names that involve sun rays or something. And if you had a highly tentacled double, maybe call it Shag Rug.

And of course, there's also nothing wrong with naming a plant in honor of a person!

    Nate

I'm voting for Shag Rug, think it's hilarious, but appropriate for the look. As to Clowns in Washington, I know there is a daylily named Stupidville, so that must be where the clowns are. Avedon

I LOVE Shag Rug, especially for a dl that is burnt orange, gold or avocado green.

Here is CLOWNS IN WASHINGTON as it grows here. The name makes me laugh whenever I pass by it! I sent Bret a name which he will hopefully use next year. It will be a perfect companion daylily for CIW!! I like several of his names for cultivars, such as DESPERATE HOUSECATS. Don't grow that one but do grow ONE CAT TOO MANY.

Oh, that's a fun one. Very festive.

    Nate

Thank you for the pic, Floota. CIW is a real looker. I'll have to wait for this one to come down in price but I do see two others that I might buy. My name pick for a CIW companion dl is "Iwannabe President."

    And another one.

The toothed ones that I have seen and liked were usually dark flowers with light teeth. Like Fortune's Dearest-however, garden pictures I have seen of this flower don't look quite as nice.

I don't know. I think it's a beauty, but well beyond even my limit to spend on a single fan. CIW is a real attention getter, isn't it?

To my eye, just plain ugly. Wouldn't take a free one!
