hoyas to grow AWAY from the strongest light source?

Have a cutting that a friend gave me [she doesn't know what kind] and it is starting to take off. To my surprise, however, it is growing away from the window which is w/o a doubt the strongest light source.

Btw, I was surprised too that the vine, which is already about 1.5 ft long is not cascading but rather shooting straight out sideways. Will it cascade later or should I plan on trying to find something to train the vine to?

Well, most of mine that move in any direction definitely move towards the window... I had to turn the Imperialis round the other day as it's leaf was going that way!

It does, however, depend on which way the vine is bending - if the vine is bending opposite to where the light is, then so will the leaves in general.

As to cascading - well it depends on the type of hoya you have. Some will grow up quite a lot, such as my polyneura, before they cascade over. If you knew what kind of hoya you have it would help a little so we can give you some advice. If you don't know, post a pic or give a description...

It is very possible for hoyas to grow away from high light sources. My hoya serpens has always grown away from the window, so I moved it to an indirect light source, and it went absolutely crazy. My Hoya erythrina also does much better away from the windows, but still with indirect light. However, my Hoya kunming kina goes absolutely crazy on my west window sill. It gets direct light, and the pot actually gets quite warm from the high sun it receives. The leaves all grow toward the window in one direction, so I have to turn it frequently to keep its growth even.

What type of hoya is your cutting?

Mine all grow away from the light too! Not sure why?

For me, I'd say it's normal:-)

Interesting question, I'd never thought abt this before.

Hum, well they mostly grow towards the light. But I just went inside & looked at them, & all but 2 grow towards the light (west window in my case). The exceptions are Obovata (whose new, bare vines seem to grow down, away from the light & window) & a no ID which may be Kentiana, which grows right next to the window & oddly, threw a vine in the opposite direction. Now that we're talking abt this, that does seem kind of odd, I wonder why ...

Cool question Paul, thanks for asking it. Well, since we don't know what kind of Hoya it is, can you pls. describe its leaves &/or growth habit?

It can't hurt to find something to train it on. Maybe that's why it's reaching out in such an odd direction, looking for something to grab on to???

    Generally speaking:

Plants grow away from the light if they are getting too much light.
Plants grow torward the light if they are not getting enough.

My Kentiana/wayetii definately grew away from the light when it was outside this summer. Most others grew torwards the sun, but my carnosa sprung out in every possible direction.
