Keeping my hummers cool and happy

I am trying to snap some closeup pictures of my hummers. My camera does not zoom very far. So, I hung a water hose on a branch near a feeder, and turned on the "mist." Wow, did the hummers love buzzing thru the mist, and it was so much fun to watch!

Hey, I'm going to try that since I can't find a mister online, how long can I leave the hose turned on mist without it running up a huge water bill? Since it's my parents who will be paying it.

I plan on turning it on for an hour at 6 pm when they feed the most, but not sure how much that would cost me, how long do you have yours on and at what time of day?

    Jay,
I only left the water hose on for about 45 minutes (low mist)at 7:30 pm, when they are most active. You don't have to worry since your parents are paying the bill, just teasing! Some of my friends brag about their smart dogs. Well, I don't own a dog, but my hummers are very smart! I plan on turning the hose on mist again soon, but I am leaving tomorrow for a trip to Houston to visit my granddaughter. Sometimes I spray the feeders with the hose, and the hummers love it. If I move a feeder to another location, they will check out the old location several times, but they always find the feeders, where ever I put them. They are becoming more friendly and are feeding at the window feeders also. I hope they hang around until I return home.

I have a friend at work that puts out a sprinkler that puts out mist and small drops in a circle. Her hummers love it and will fly into it.
But I live in an apartment, so I bought one of those misters that they have at the theme parks to cool people off. You know the ones with the fine cooling mists?
My hummers will not go near it!

    Rob,
Sorry your hummers do not like your mister. Keep trying. I had hummers sit at a feeder during Hurricanes in the past,so they should not be afraid of it. My 3 y.o. granddtr. and I had a marvelous day today watching the hummers. I have 3 window feeders, so she could watch up close from inside. I have a male hummer guarding two feeders hanging in a tree, and he will not allow any others near. He perched on a twig near the feeders almost all day. My g.dtr. held a feeder in her hand, and female hummers buzzed very close by, but would not sip. As soon as I hung the feeder back up, they came feed immediately. Grandchildren and hummers are awesome!

We had a rain shower yesterday afternoon, and the temp.went down to 83 degrees, nice. I noticed an increase in number of hummers enjoying the shower. I still have one male guarding a feeder all day. I have several females, getting fatter, feeding from the other feeders. One female stays perched on my Jewel Box window feeder, chasing the others away. I am happy I was patient with the JB feeder, and I don't know why it took so long for a hummer to try it. I have a couple of one port feeders at the windows and they like it also, but there is no perch on it, so they hover and feed. My g.children are really involved and are enjoying watching and learning about the hummers. One is named "Joe,the Bully," and the female is named "Sugar!"
    Grandkids and hummers are awesome!
