thought i would share my big clay pot setup.

Well after hearing about how easy it is for these pots to freeze and break ..I decided to go a different route. this one has the open clay inside, it is not sealed up.

What i do is this.I have some Hosta in cheap plastic pots, at this time nothing fancy.. just things that were replaced with nicer types.

I took a big foundation brick and sat it down in the clay pot to both weigh it down, and make a stand inside for the cheap inner pot.

That way it LOOKS like it is planted when it actually isn't !

In the winter I take the inner pot out to store
(hopefully successfully) ..and I cover the Big clay pot with a lid. In this case I have been using a grey garbage can lid. I tie a good sized weight onto the lid so it won't be blowing off and letting rain and snow inside during the winter.

I hope this helps someone, gives you ideas, or you can point out some problems that might yet arise from this setup, allowing the idea to be improved.

That tall blue planter is gorgeous. Is it too big to wrestle into the garage or somewhere else dry for the winter?

Is that Hanky Panky off to the left and Georgia Peach heuchie down below? Can hardly wait for my new GP heuchie to get big like that. It's planted in a 12" glazed ceramic pot. It's not in a separate inner pot. I wonder what I can do with it when winter comes?

Jan that pot is a hand full to move around !

Esther that Hosta on the left is Striptease, and yes that is a pretty happy Georgia peach in the front.

that pot is to KILL FOR ..

buy a dolly.. and put it away in october.. so it can dry enough by freeze time ... something with a big footprint ... trust me.. as you get older.. it will be money well spent ... see link

i like your lid idea... but i dont want to find out if your theory will work ...

Here is a link that might be useful: something like this.. but crikey.. not at that price.. you can put some 1/2 plywood on the base.. and move all kinds of things ... i swear mine was less than 50 bucks.. though 10 years ago .... try tractor supply.. etc ... just dont get one with those useless 6 inch lip...

I did the same thing with my Paul's Glory. It is planted in a plastic pot and then put inside the ceramic pot. In the fall, I take the plant out and have my son drag the pot into the shed. I have been meaning to get a dolly to make it easier since I have several pots that have to be put away every fall.

I love your blue pot! Here is picture of mine.

btw ... some peeps use old empty pots.. upside down.. to set pots on .. inside other pots...

maybe you can get it a bit higher in your glorious pot ...

And to add to what Ken said, you can stack as many empty pots as you need to get the right height.

Well, I also wish to suggest that those big pieces of lightweight styrofoam you get in appliances or other packaging, can very well hold up the weight of a pot. The styrofoam is lighter to pick up when you move the pot, and won't crack the ceramic or clay.
Besides, that keeps it out of landfills.

All my glazed pots are not glazed on the inside either....i've never even seen a pot that was glazed inside and out. I do as you do and simply put a hosta in a nursery liner, then slip that inside the decorative pot. For the winter, I sink the nursery pots into the ground then turn the empty ceramic pots upside down..they do fine.
