Pricing and Garage Sale

I needed to thin my 7 year old iris bed and thought I'd put them on my garage sale. I have no idea on how to price them though. Some are very, very small with only a pair of leaves and some are very large with 3 or 4 sets of leaves.

Should I tell the people that buy them to cut the fans down or just plant as is. They are the common purple ones.

Anyone tell me what the name is?

Thanks

There are so many "common purple" irises being grown around the country that it will be impossible for anyone to tell you whether or even if they are named, registered irises. They may very well just be unregistered seedlings that cropped up in a garden somewhere sometime. You're better off selling them as the unknowns they are.

I would recommend bundling the small rhizomes 6-10 to a brown lunch bag and selling them for a few bucks. You could sell the clumps of 3-4 fans for the same price. Just don't make the mistake I made the one time I sold my extra irises at a yard sale. I separated and trimmed each clump into individual rhizomes, then placed each cultivar in a large paper grocery bag with a picture and description of the cultivar on the outside of the bag along with the price PER RHIZOME. Of course folks either didn't read the bags carefully or didn't understand what a rhizome was, and I ended up with folks carrying bags of rhizomes up to my table, expecting to buy the entire bag for the single rhizome price. Aggravated me and made the potential customer mighty unhappy.

I would recommend trimming your plants before you sell them. It'll make them easier to handle and bag and will give them a cleaner appearance to your customers. Cut the fans down to about 8" and the roots to 4-6".

Thanks Laurie...I'll learn from your garage sale!!
There are a lot of people out there that don't know gardening terms like we do!!

Thanks for the tips....if they don't sell maybe I'll give one with purchase!!

    A few more tips:

If you have a photo of the iris in bloom, make sure you display it prominently so that your customers will know what they're buying. Also note the height of the iris.

Write up a basic culture sheet to give to your buyers so they know how to properly plant and care for their irises.

Everybody loves freebies. Toss in a couple of extra free rhizomes with each purchase.

If you don't manage to sell or give them all away, offer your extras to your local garden club. They'll LOVE them!
