Snow Cap and Water

This is a photo of a typical 5-7 year old Snow Cap, worthless pain in the butt that I just dug out the ground/soil.

I usually set up an experiment then report the results, this time you are in on field work from the get go. I'll report in succeeding years on this live or die you worthless piece of crap.

Notice the close-up of the crown with the little dormant eyes on previous years new growth. This looks like I can see each years growth sort of like growth rings.

Now, I placed it on its side because I couldnÂt do it any other way and anchored it with a rock so it wouldnÂt wash away.

I'm trying to kill this one?

Actually I have a few in the woods all old with one eye but not so bad looking. I would get a photo but I would be afraid it might encourage someone to get one.

I saw a huge O.S. clump in Minn that would knock your socks off, I think this one that just didn't or wouldn't go through TC. I got mine from the best TC man in the country about 10-12 years ago and they are worthless.

They are sort of like the ugly duckling that grew up double ugly.

Well you won't be able to say it died from a lack of water. Glad you didn't just toss it. It might surprise you...or not.

peter ruh has one by his barn that is soooooo nice i had to try it

got mine from Dr. dave and had high hopes but.... you know the rest

YOURS IS TWICE AS BIG AS MY 10 YEAR OLD PLANT ...

YOU UNDERSTATE ITS WORTHLESSNESS... PIECE OF CARP FOR SURE...

"peter ruh has one by his barn that is soooooo nice i had to try it"

I will wager that his is O.S., I know that Alex Summers recommended H.'Snow Cap' which led to it being put into TC.

I really don't have high hopes but it will be interesting. Back to the crown and the tiny old dormant eyes that must be 3-4 years old that never pushed through. If you remember the "Fairy Ring" post, may want to go back, anyway the inside of the area that stopped growing had that same woody look when I started the "mulch volcano" treatment. The added moisture may allow those dormant eyes to emerge then maybe in these conditions new eyes can emerge.

Hosta are just my favorite toy I ever had.

Wow, that is one nasty-lookin hosta. But it looks stressed too. I wager it'll be a lot happier in the stream.
Whatever happens, you can only go up from here.

Mine still looks pretty good Greenguy. So does Brother Stefan. Maybe we got a better subtype than most.

That little piece of brother stephan is growing well for you? I lost mine but have a different one but that is a whole new long story. I think stephan does not like me but we will see. Got a pic?

Brother Stefan is faster growing than Snow Cap.
No pic right now, will have to remember to get one, which is a challenge in itself. This weekend is Homestead hosta weekend with Mark Zilis speaking at 11 am Saturday and 1 pm Sunday. Also my son's high school graduation party.

Snow Cap....What a piece of sh...t!!! That's one for the garbage...not even worth to throw it to the compost pile!!

Who knows...maybe it could grow in the north or south pole???...where it would be permanently capped with snow!!

That is one sad looking hosta..hehe

This is still looking good. But so far we've had a cool and wet spring.I'm sure it will look bad by the end of July..hehe Planted 2001 but didn't do well in the maple roots the first few years. So replanted in a large pot in the ground,it seemed to help.

Dave if i don't make it there try and get a pic of his snow cap - it is in front of his red barn on the left side

One of the reasons I,m doing this particular plant is because I've proven pretty conclusively that plants grow well in these conditions.

I just removed a huge plant that had simply over grown the stream. And, the small plants do well so I would recommend small plants only unless you just want a big one.

Now why, there are plants that perform poorly such as Snow Cap and many Great Expectations and others that have disappointed. Maybe, hopefully if it does well then we will know what to do with those plants that simply sit there either not growing or go backwards. I never recommend any of these for obvious reasons but some have nice color or leaves and the serious collector may want a way to grow those pieces of crap.

Hosta rule; put your KaKa in one hand and H.'Snow Cap' in the other and tell me which one fills up first.

    Wow E.O.,
You have exuded much wisdom today! Ka Ka -vs- Snow Cap. Hmmmm?

I am 'His Butchness' able to work small miracles.

A pilgrim appeared at my door knocking, "who is that outside my door", "ME was the reply". I bade him go away he was not ready to learn anything.

The pilgrim went back down the mountain, studied and considered his journey toward enlightenment and returned.

Knock, Knock came a rap at my portal, "who is that outside my door", "YOU"!

ÂHis Butchness responded "come on in myself".

Ha, I got me on that one!

You probably thought I could fool myself?

    I'm tired of alluding myself!

Just an update, not sure the photo shows at least five eyes developing.

The eye on the top right is growing directly out of the water.

So do you have a newer picture of Snow Cap than you posted in the other thread? It's had all summer to do its thang. It should be a monster by now.

It should be a monster by now.
    Lainey

That is a monster for H.'Snow Cap'. That it grows period is a testament to my great skills.
Here is the latest photo that I think I posted elsewhere which doesn't show much.
You will notice the long stacked up eyes broke in half so they are lying side by side.
