Mouse Ears Photos Please

I have a few photo op ideas of hosta I want to see from you shutter bugs. Yous guys might like my other ideas better than this one but from my viewpoint, I wanna SEE these.

I would like to see your Mouse Ears in Blue, Green, Supreme, Holy, Frosted, etc. including sports and anything you may have introduced with a mouse ears parent. Especially fun would be if you show me ones I don't know about.

If you play :o) please include the names with the photos (or on the photos like some of you do). And if you have the time and fortitude, let me/us know which ones are easier or more difficult or any other habits you've noticed.

Thanks,

Regattagirl

p.s. "Yous guys" is Minnesotan for "y'all."

I'll try this linking thing again... Ah. That works. And now I know I can preview and click on a link in the preview before submitting a link. Here are my mice. Just recently got Cat and Mouse, so they are all in little pots.

Here is a link that might be useful: Two little Mice

Nice Mice! Thanks for pointing out the old post. And now you have 3 so I'll be curious to know how well they get along or should I say to "see how they run."

I crack myself up. Good thing I'm not an egg.

Reported to be a seedling, I don't know?

    EO....

I was asking if it was a Frosted Mouse Ears seedling rather than a BME seedling. The tag in the pic says "Frosted" but your typing above it says BME. I wasn't questioning if it was a seedling but what it was a seedling of.

    Haha. We are funny.

Ok, here is my BRAND NEW, JUST ARRIVED TODAY Frosted Mouse Ears!!!! What timing! And what a cute little baby it is!

EO your Cat and Dog are dears!
I have Cat and Mouse on order and hope to get it soon.
Here is One Iota Streaked. It didn't flower this summer. Maybe next year!

yardmom....these are AWESOME and contratulations on your new bundle of joy!

Last one. Here is the mouse imposter. Country mouse. It's a cutie too. It is in the middle between Pandora's Box and Cameo.

    yardmom...Thanks so much for playing!

You make it seem like loads of fun to collect these so I'm very excited about doing it....but I still don't know what zone you are in????

Opps! Sorry, I am in zone 6b, the warmer side of 6. I love collecting minis, and the Mouse Ears are fun! I actually bought green mouse ears a year or two ago, but it seems to have disappeared...
Do you have any minis, regattagirl?

Interesting color on that seedling, EO!

Babka, how will those hostas do in zone 9? Can we see a picture of your cat and mouse? Did it come from Victoria?

I'd love to see more pictures, everyone!

Holy Mouse Ears at the top
Frosted Mouse Ears at the bottom
Blue Mouse Ears to the right (with bud)
Green Mouse Ears to the left
and in the center - what else but Cat's Eye

    yardmom...

I'm so sorry you can't find your 'Green Mouse Ears'. Do you think you could put out some cheese in a live trap to catch him? hehehe

I live near Minneapolis, zone 4a (gah). I'm thinking of starting a collection of MICE and other minis since I can only container garden on my patio here at my townhouse. I do have space in my garage to winter them over in nursery pots so this seems like a way to play along with you all and start my collection. My only hosta is 'BME' and it is a hostage at my mother's house. I took a picture last weekend but I think the disk has gone bad in my camera. I have the following photo from the day I planted it - very waxy little guy with huge bloom, eh?. I can't wait until all of his leaves are roundy-er.

I'd love to get any advice you have on growing MICE and other minis you have experience with (shade, water, soil, etc).

I got Blue Mouse Ears back in 2002. It has been happily growing in pot for all these years. I just got Cat and Mouse from Naylor Creek off the Hosta Library Auction. 3 nice eyes.

    oh babka....

I love them when their leaves are roundy! You are obviously doing something right!

waynet - what a pretty BME... can't wait for mine to fill out as nicely...

I have a fern that looks similar to yours - I think its name is Athyriam felix-femina Victoriae - if not, looks a lot like it with the crests at the frond ends and the crisscross architecture - in Victoriae, half the 'branches' tilt up and half back...

sheesh - there's so much to see...! How lucky are we to be so enthralled?

i would really like a 4 foot tall bme with 2ft. wide & long leaves

    Chernobyl Mouse Ears?

LOL, greenguy! That's one BME I would love to see!

Wayne, I like that fern too. Your gardens are beautiful!

Nice full BME, babka! Do you leave your pots out or put them in the freezer?

Woodthrush, I just bought a pot (not really a pot, have to drill a hole in it) like the one you have your BME babies in! Haven't put anything in it yet...maybe my babies will go in it!

regattagirl, my mini's in pots go in the shed for the winter. Ceramic pots can crack if there is too much moisture in it when they freeze so I try to get them in when they have had a few days to drain out, rather than right after it rains or gets watered. I also plant them in plastic and set them inside of a pot. I do have a wooden planter with another BME that stays out all winter and I have given it no special care or mulch. If your townhouse patio has an overhang or ceiling from a balcony, it can be left out, pushed back so it doesn't get alot of rain/snow/moisture. I don't know if there are special considerations for zone 4, but maybe maybe someone from zone 5 or zone 4 can tell you if they do something different.

Thanks yardmom for all the tips! Last year in Feb. there were 16 days in a row that never got above 0 degrees. 10 of those were below -25 degrees! Hmmm....I think I'll put them in the garage!

Pam! I can't believe I missed your post. You must have posted when I did before and then I thought mine was the last. That is THEE coolest collection container. I LOVE IT! It's my goal!

Hello Esther Opal can you please provide more info on the "frosted" or BME seedling pic that you have posted? Thank You

That BME is about 17" across. No freezer. Hostas don't need to be frozen, just cool and w/o water for 6 weeks after they go dormant. I put a tarp over all my pots in Winter to keep the rain off. I lost a lot to rot when I didn't do that. Of course they'll never get really whopper sized like they do back East, but I can live with that...and no snow!

I have left some in pots and stored them on the bare floor in the greenhouse. It's cool enough to keep them dormant. Then in late Feb I start watering and put the pots on a higer shelf.

    Greenhouse? Did someone say greenhouse?

Okay, as long as you mini-keepers are paying attention to this thread (I appreciate every post), does anyone have more pictures of 'Cameo' (besides the fab one that yardmom posted)?

I saw one today passing by a little roadside greenhouse that takes good care of their stuff and she was so little and teeny and cute. I think I may go back to get her. I think around $10 (plus gasoline which is the real kicker).

Uhh ohh, regattagirl! Don't get me started!
    If you love Cameo:

Then you have to have Cherish to go with it!

    Uh Ohhh....is right!!!!!!!!!

They are ADORABLE. They are both going on my list. I'm so jealous.

    Regatta (going to sulk now)

Babka, That is the most perfect BME I have ever seen. They are all adorable however that one is the best!

Thanks Hostabuff. It is one of my favorites every year. The nice part is that it stays looking that good into Fall.

Here is my Blue Mouse Ears... Look closely and you'll see a penny on a leaf for size reference.

    Buff

    BME

OMG, Buff - that is a spectacular hosta - I love when the flowers are on nice short scapes asd so very full - Blue Cadet does that for me, but be still my heart and hurry up my BMEs!!!

Hello Esther Opal can you please provide more info on the "frosted" or BME seedling pic that you have posted? Thank You

You know as much or more than I do, it was posted in another place and I understood it was a seedling.

I posted it as a an interesting photo, I hope to see a plant that looks like that photo.

Does that mean you do not own the seedling, EO? You were just posting a picture you saw?

Ester opal Can you tell me what "other place" you found this? I can actually tell you alot about the photo as I was the one that most likely posted it elsewhere since it is my name in your File Title.. The Picture is FROSTED MOUSE EARS taken last fall by the Originator EJ Deckert of Naturesreign.com It is NOT a seedling but a sport of RME. (Royal Mouse Ears). If I may When You take pictures from some where (with or with out permition as is the case here) PLEASE DONT place personal info in the File title.. and only add correct information....As it will only cause confussion. I would also recommend to ANYONE taking photos from "other places" to ask permission. Most Do Not mind sharing but it is their work you are taking.
I will add that FME is a spectacular plant as is Holy and Royal Mouse Ears or any of the Deckerts Creations

hostamaniac, Was that a photo of RME that I understood to be a seedling? Thank you for clarifying, I would have continued to believe it was a seedling erroneously. I went to the hostalibrary and it doesn't look like Royal Mouse Ears?

Do you know what this is a photo of?

The pic is FROSTED MOUSE EARS (FME) it is a sport of Royal Mouse Ears (RME. the pic was taken in the fall to show its colors...

Thanks for clarifying that, hostamaniac! Wow, FME sure holds up nice in the fall.

    yardmom...

Guess what I did today? And, um, it's all YOUR fault.

Now let's see if I can keep it alive. Poor thing. I almost want to send it to you to take care of it and then you just send me pictures. I do LOVE that perfect little heart shapped leaf!

    Baby 'Cameo'

"The pic is FROSTED MOUSE EARS (FME) it is a sport of Royal Mouse Ears (RME. the pic was taken in the fall to show its colors.."
    hostamaniac

It did look to me like fall colors but as I said I understood it was a BME seedling and didn't know what I was looking at.

Thank you for the clarification, please feel free to help me anytime my information is unclear or inaccurate.

I felt regardless of what it was the photo was cute enough to see so I posted it without information (that I didn't have) that you've helped clear up for me and everyone.

Cute Cameo! Now how could you POSSIBLY think I had anything to do with your buying a mini????? ;o)

Are you going to plant your minis together or in separate pots?

I see that I need all of the mice, as well as all the other mini's shown in the thread. I had a plan for my hosta collecting. I was going to get the big guys first, so I could space them reasonably. Then, and only then, get some mini's to fill in here and there, along edges, etc.. Well, that plan is gone, lol. I absolutely love these! The fact that I can use them in containers and move them around is very appealing also. What fun!

Oh great, I shouldn't have opened this thread! Now I'm going to have to build a bed for mini hostas! It's going to have to be raised as our yard has a tendency to flood in the winter, and wouldn't want the wee ones to get washed away. Hmmm...now where to put it?

    Karen

esther Opal The thread you got the pix from was a discussion of BME seedlings.. We hope to one day see a YELLOW SEEDLING so I posted a Pic of the fall colors on FME to show what we hope to see ...
Very Nice Pics of the Minis everyone.. Really like the mixed bed (sorry cant remember whos it was) Cherish is very nice as is Cameo... Havnt figured out how to add pics yet sorry

Hello Yardmom I beleive your also the same from the forum I normally preuse? Hope all is well? Yes all the Mice tend to hold up well Into Nov here. FME as exceptional coloring thou

    hostamaniac

As I said I saw the photo and assumed it was fall color but took it at face value when you indicated it was a seedling.
Since finally we know it was yours, was your purpose to indicate a wish rather than a fact.

Regardless, I rather enjoy fall colors even though they don't last long. The mice seem to be sporting like crazy so we will probably see something like your photo someday, wouldn't that be fun?

eo you have to be careful if you upload pics from the web. You are lucky it was not copy protected. when you post a pic. that is not your own you should post the link or give credit to the owner in some way. bare minimun point out clearly it is not yours.

I am not saying this to be a jerk or rude but you can get in big trouble if you grab a pic from the wrong person or company.

again i don't want to single out eo this is something everyone needs to be careful with as it has become so easy to copy paste images off the web.

Yes, hostamania, that is me you have seen on the other forum. Is Windham anywhere near Conway NH? My brother live near there.

EO the thread was a discussion of Mouse Ear SEEDLINGS. the conversation Kaitales and I had was we would like to see a yellow Mouse Ears.. I posted a pic of Frosted Mouse Ear (title of file was "Fall FME" before you altered it) to show the color we HOPE to see. At NO time did i indicate or alude to FME being a seedling...

Hi d Yardmom Conway is lil more north. Im right on the Mass/NH border.. Enjoy your newbie... Daisey dolittle and Cherish are other great ones (very nice pic and hosta shown earlier of cherish, dont recall whos.... Sorry ill have to learn names) .. Ill try posting some if I can ever find this "bucket" thing....:D

OOOPSS Sorry Yardmom Im reading backwards it seems.. The cherish and Cameo are yours. Nice ones!!

Wayne Very Nice bed! great color and texture.. the Japanese grass and heuchera (caramel?) frame it all nicely.

    hostamanic

You are way to kind to go to the trouble to clear this up.

Clearly I was confused about the photo.

Sorry EO Im rereading my post and it sounds harsh. Not Intended! I have a GREAT deal of respect for the Deckerts and dont want any confusion about their plant caused by me... if I can be of futher help just ask..
    Thanks Roger

Sorry EO Im rereading my post and it sounds harsh. Not Intended!
    Roger

No problem, I had glanced at the thread and took it to say a seedling, the reason I was vague about what the photo was because I really wasn't sure what I was looking at. I'm sure like you it did seem fun that there would be a BME with coloration something like the photo.

Simply stated I'm here to have fun, learn or teach. Anytime you can shed light on what I report it is welcome. I may disagree with someone's information but seldom will that be personal based on the belief that everyone has a right to their own opinion but not their own facts.

I'm sure you noticed that I never gave specific information except, "how about a seedling" which was even a bit more than I felt I knew?

Again thank you for you response.
