A plant called 'New Zealand orchid'

I am trying to find the Latin name for a plant which the owner said is commonly known as a New Zealand orchid. It grows about 5 ft tall, has a thick, hollow stem and its flowers are purple and look like a Lady's slipper, blooms in July and has aromatic leaves. It is not an orchid. The seeds are ejected a long way from the plant (the owner said that they land 40-50 ft away) and are now sprouting all over his lawn (ie. highly viable). If you know what this plant could be, please reply!
