Hey, Hey_J! Where's A 'Janicee' Update?

Hey, Janice, did you post an updated photo of your NR sport 'Janicee' and I just missed it?

I really liked that plant and would like to know how it's doing.

I almost bought a five dollar 'Francee' at Lowe's tonight but lost my nerve at the last minute. An HVX-infected five-dollar plant could be the most expensive plant I ever buy... I'm such a wuss.

Hey Lisa!! Thanks for asking about my infamous 'Janicee'! I'm afraid she's abit unstable!! Whaaaa!
Even when performing as 'Janicee' there was a problem of the drawstring effect as the season progressed!
I'm still looking for more of her to appear in the future, and I'll just enjoy the *show* while I can,
for as long as I can! The leaves of that particular sport were alot like 'Jewel of the Nile' in variation!
Some leaves became all chartreus/gold or chartreus/gold with a cream margin and some with the three colors and
some the usual look of 'Francee'! I loved it when it was margined with the yellow and green stripes--the best!!!

It was fun while it lasted, though! :o)

Lisasmall - if the Francee looks healthy, buy it. Take precautions planting it and don't worry. I found myself reading about HVX and then running out to look at my hostas, several of which I just knew had HVX. I still look for it, but I no longer worry. If some of my Gold Standards show signs of HVX, no big deal - I'll replace them. If you buy healthy looking plants and clean your tools between handling, HVX should not be a big deal. Not to say HVX isn't a big deal - it is, but don't worry unnecessarily.

JBranch, thanks for the advice... now to get a ride back to Lowe's! :) But I think I can, on Monday.

Janice, I'm sorry to hear that... I was imagining being among the first to get a 'Janicee' but if she's not stable, she's not. Still, exciting while it lasted, eh?

Yep--I really liked the idea that I might be able to have such an interesting looking hosta that sprung up
on it's own! Oh well---I hope I get a neat sport of some kind, some day, that will be stable.

Here's what she looked like the first couple of years:

Janice, that's gorgeous! What hosta is it supposed to be?

Heeyy, Deanna! You're sure up late for a workin-gal! LOL
Hard to adjust to the time change, I bet! :o)

To answer your question, that's a sport of my 'Francee'! She sported one set of variegated leaves one year, and I thought it
was just a passing *fancy*, but when it showed up with more of the same type of leaves the following season, I divided
it out! It held well, that summer and then I moved it to a bed where it got less sun, unfortunately (to avoid the tearing of
the cream margins) and it failed to demonstrate the same vigor and variation. I don't know if that had that much to do with it,
in reality, but by this Spring, it had reverted back to mostly the 'Francee' look! One leaf was all chartreuse with the cream
margin but the rest were 'Francee' all the way! :o(

'Buff24' found a registered sport, that had the same look as mine, already named-so it apparently is a fairly common
sporting habit! I understand, that 'Francee" is fairly prolific in sporting--a *fertile myrtle* maybe? But, then
I guess it's not a matter of 'fertility' but mutating, instead?? Don't think I have that understanding down pat yet!

Apparently, (according to one of the pics. at 'the Library') the registered 'Fancy Francee' is also very unstable!

Here is a link that might be useful: 'Fancy Francee'

Janice,my little Francee sport was very small this year'due to the freeze, however,it survived the year. I will update it next year, when it comes back up. Sorry to hear yours is unstable. Mine looked different this year, but I still attribute that to being half frozen in the spring! I hope it survives the winter. Phil
