Silver date palm - Phoenix sylvestris

Hello,

I purchased a small silver date from ebay (seller was rosiepalms, and was an outstanding seller) and received it today. The palm looks great and I planted it in a pot right away. I know it is cold hardy to about 22 degrees. Also, what I've read says it's growth rate is "moderate." First question, when should I plant it in the ground (I live south of Houston, just north of Galveston, zone 9)? Second, does anyone have a better term than moderate? I've heard phoenix are usually slow, but literature shows this one to be faster than all of the phoenix family. Of course I wish it were as fast as a queen or foxtail, but I'm somewhat realistic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I would keep it inside until the nights are consistently in the high 40's-50's and then plant it outside. Maybe fert it for the first time a month after you plant it with a palm fert with a ratio of 3-1-2 ( like 20-6-12) and some epsom salts.

Always treats me well..
I ordered a queen palm from them with 10 seedlings very good size not the little seedlings you get elsewhere..

On top of that they sent me a free palm
I expected to get a seedling what i got was a 36 inch
washingtonia robusta !!

They will be around along time taking care of people like that !!

as for your question .. Silver dates grow a whole lot faster than regular dates according to what iv'e read anyways .... good luck !

Hey Topher,
I had about 20 Dachy Seeds and had 100% success, I had 50 CIDP Seeds and 100% Success and I had about 20 Sylves Seeds with 100% success.
However.. I have all the Dachys are growing the the "starter" and now about 75% of the CIDP are growing the "starter". But I still have no sign of any Syvles "starter". Any thoughts? Patience maybe?

Yeah you know how the germination thing is some will , some wont , some do , some don't patience is the key..Sounds like your doing right !

medjools finally popped still waiting on my royals and my
other robustas though wait.. wait... wait... sigh

When your robustas germinated did some pop before the others ?

Nah, not really. What I did was waited until a Saturday, potted the popped ones, then waited a week and planted the one or two stragglers the next Saturday. Pretty much after that, I didn't have any that popped.
However what you might do is something I just recently started. Take unpopped seeds, put them in water, if they floated, I pitched them. If they sank, I threw into a bucket with natural dirt from my back yard. Then I forget about them. I think I will check on them about April and see if anything is going on.
