I like the dark moulding around the ceiling. Why did you go dark?

I love wood trim. Most trim these days is white. Not sure why?

Thanks for your comment Kelly. I suggested the dark molding for a couple of reasons. First of all I didn't want the vanity to be the only dark thing in the room. By using the dark crown molding and the dark skinny liner in the tile detail I had it in at least three places which is a good rule of thumb for me. Second, I knew the ceiling was going to be white and I didn't want the molding to disappear, I wanted it to be noticeable. White is easy, and neutral, that's probably why it is used so often.

What finish is on the dark molding? I am looking to refinish existing woodwork and wondered if you have a good suggestion for refreshing an old stained finish without stripping it?

We ordered prefinished molding from the cabinet company. The color is called espresso and it's stained over maple wood. I would visit a good paint / stain store in your area and bring a sample of the wood you would like to stain. They could give you some good advice on products to use for your project.
