The curse of the '50-75% Off Sale!'

I couldn't help it--I was having a bad day yesterday and succumbed to the siren's call--the 50-75% sale at a local plant stand.

I couldn't help it! I drive by two of those stands every morning, and I hear those plants calling me every darn time . . . .

"Please take me home with you!"

"I'm really VERY pretty!"

"I WANT TO LIVE!"

Okay, I'm a little dramatic, but I'm serious--I bought almost 2 full flats of stuff--great bargain, $26 for all of it, but where am I gonna put it all?

And, lord help me, tomorrow I'm going to the OKC Cactus and Succulent Society Show and Sale at Will Rogers Park.

Somebody say a prayer for me . . . .

    Katyar,

I suspect it is too late for prayer to stop you from buying more stuff, so instead I'll pray that you find a place to put it all.

Go ahead and have fun at the Cactus and Succulent Show and Sale today. Tomorrow is a new day, and tomorrow you can figure out what to do with it all!

TLC is also having their Midnight Madness sale this weekend. Oh, for an extra buck or two!

Are you sure we have the climate for the Cactus and Succulent????? We are getting rain in Grove today so maybe some of you are getting a break. I am afraid that my gardening days will be few this summer since I have a broken foot and a great big boot. For 20 years I have had rods in my back and of course my back doesn't bend. Now I have this boot which is like wearing a 2x6 under your foot with another attached to it and strapped to your leg, so of course, my ankle doesn't bend. I look like the newest member of the Adams Family every time I walk. I am usually fairly independent, but not today. I went to Wal-mart, parked in Handicap parking, and rode their little electric cart all over the store. Well, it was raining and I had time to kill. Might as well get some mileage out of this "handicapped" condition.

Soonergranmom, sorry to hear about your circumstance. What happened anyway?

Is the Cactus Show 'free' and where is it? Somewhere around Will Rogers Garden thingy?

Is the sale at TLC really at midnight or is that just for advertising purposes? I'm 'really' a night person Where is the TLC located?

Boy I'm glad this message is working. The last couple days everytime I tried to post this GardenWeb site was hell bent on running some huge video clip my computer can't handle and I had to go elsewhere. I wish they would ID the capabilities of the PC they hook up with and only feed it stuff it can handle. Inconsiderate web designers!

Hank, the Cactus show is free, it's at the Will Rogers Garden Center at NW 36th and I-44. It's today until 5 and tomorrow from 10-4, I think. They had lots of fun stuff and were giving away free door prizes regularly.

I bought 12 plants and some soil and dressing rock, including a gorgous jade tree that's about 16-18 inches high. Prices were very reasonable, and there was a very nice selection. I was unaware until recently that there is a cactus nursery over on NE 17th Street, open by appointment only (I think they travel a lot), and they were one of the vendors. I'll try to get some photos up later on my blog--my computer is not acting very happy right now and I'm not sure why.

Soonergrandmom, you're right--right now it's way too wet for these plants. I hope to be able to put them out later when it starts drying out and staying sunny and warm. Right now I have most of my cacti and succulents on a large shelf in front of my dining room window. They get eastern sun and some supplemental light from a floor lamp. However, I heard several people at the show say that they grow cacti outside in the ground every year with no problems.

Dawn, you are a true enabler--thank you!

Oh, and I almost forgot--the Water Garden Society of Oklahoma will be having a public tour of gardens and ponds on July 14th and 15th. I'm putting this one on my calendar for sure. For more info, go to www. wgso.org.

    TLC...Midnight Madness.... YEAHHHHH!!!!

I have called all over and they are the only ones that carry teh Ornamental Oregano that I want. Of course it was PRICEY too (I think $18 for a 1 gallon)... maybe now I can afford to buy groceries AND the ornamental oregano :)))

Thanks for the head's up Susan!!

Soonergrandma - I sympathize with your "boot", I have broken both of my heel bones at separte times in my life, the first time the set me in a cast. ARGH that was the worst! The second time was easier because I had the boot insead of the cast. I wasn't supposed to put any weight on it, but my thoughts were that it had tread on the bottom for a reasoN! If you end up going to physical therapy afterwards, do EVERYTHING they tell you to do... I was 24 the first time, and 27 the second time, now I'm 37 and this last winter really had me feeling my old injuries. I keep thinking I'm too young for this, but if I'd had listened to my doctor I bet I wouldn't have the pain that I do now! BTW - Ice Cream and Chocolate really do help you heal faster!! :))) I hope you're back on both of your feet really soon!

Yes, that's usually the only time I venture out to TLC....and also to get bulbs....oh, and also to buy herbs....oh, geez, I guess I don't need any excuse!

Soonergrandmom - I broke my foot last summer and they tried to stick me with one of those boots. However, I am so clumsy, it turned out to be more dangerous for me to wear the boot than to just try to get around w/o it. I planted and did about everything without the boot cause it was so uncomfortable. BTW, my foot healed just fine. I know you're supposed to wear it, but.....I don't always listen very well.

I saw that about the water garden tour on Oklahoma Gardening this morning. Their show was a recap of all Oklahoma Proven Winners since 2000, I think. Anyway, I've tried most of those plants, and few of them did well for me.

I think if you just don't tell me that something is easy to grow, then I can grow it. Otherwise, they just bite the dust.

The boot is not that bad, just big. It hurts less with the boot on than it did before I got it. I had foot pain for about four weeks. It took me two weeks to decide to go to the doctor, and another 10 days to reach appointment day. During those last few days I was beginning to think that it was broken. I don't know how I did it. We had been on vacation and I cam home and moved about 20 flower pots out of the shade and back upon a table. I also unloaded some luggage. It starting hurting that night, but I have no idea how I did it. Maybe I can have a good fall garden because I think the summer one may be ignored a little much.

    Soonergrandmom,

I hope your foot heals quickly and you are back to your usual activities before you know it! My mom broke her foot this winter and didn't know how she did it either. Hers healed nicely and she is back to her usual shopping routine, which makes her happy. She had a cast and hated going anywhere with it, so mostly stayed home while she was stuck in the cast.

    Katyar,

I am always happy to enable a fellow gardener to go crazy at plant sales! You know, if I lived anywhere near OKC I'd be going to all the same shows, sales and tours. Living down here in the boonies means I miss a lot of that stuff though.

We try to make it up to OKC once or twice a year, but haven't managed it this year. It has been one of those crazy years with weddings and wedding showers and sick friends and new babies and baby showers and funerals and graduations, etc., etc., etc. where we can't seem to go a week without having to run off here or there to go to one thing or another. Consequently, our usual 'routine' is all out of whack and I can't get myself organized. It has been an absolutely crazy year.

I hope you enjoy all your new plants. I do have some cactus growing here, even in our wet, sticky, slow-draining clay soil. I would love to have more, but think most of them couldn't take our mucky clay.

    Courtney,

I think ice cream and chocolate are the cure for whatever ails a person.....and if you aren't sick or injured, then you ought to eat them anyway, you know, to prevent illness and injury. lol

We eat lots of ice cream in the summertime, and year-round as well. My DH thinks ice cream is one of the four basic food groups, and not plain ice cream either. It has to have chocolate syrup or Magic Shell on it, nuts, cherries, sprinkles, peanuts....whatever, and the more the merrier.

Today we are going to make homemade ice cream again. It is getting to be a habit. Today's new recipe: a home-made version of Chunkey Monkey. I can hardly wait.

Ben and Jerry used to have a one that they had out around the same time as the movie Men in Black. It's name and design was to promote the movie. THAT was my favorite, they had little chunks of chocolate covered carmel pieces, with vanilla ice cream with chocolate and carmel swirls in it.... I'm craving it now just thinking about it! Of course it's been years since I had it last becuase it was a limited time only thing. I had when they do that. Get me addicted and then take it away...

Does Chunky Monkey have Marshmallow, chocolate and pecans? I can't remember what that one was called but OH MAN!!!
