RE: pot size for my palm new pic

after i found this palm i have nursed it back to health! after finding it out side in the cold i has actually grown alot! i have had it for just about a year now & i did think that the pot i put it in did look kinda big after looking at others online. i want to say thanks to all who commented on my last post. i really didnt want to take this plant outside due to the heat and it getting burned. last time i took it out it got black on the fronds. but new ones have grown since it has been inside. i am deff. going to re-pot it today but here is a link to a better pic of the pot size.

Here is a link that might be useful:

Well, the pot is better than I thought in terms of its size relative to the plant, but I would still transplant and place the new container within the larger--using the larger one decoratively. We are all assuming here that the container in the picture has drainage holes--if it doesn't, you'll definitely want to transplant. I'd love to use such beautiful containers but they are soooo expensive--I usually go with deep black plastic ones--cheap but effective. Enjoy the day!

I have to agree w/ NJ Oasis. The pot seems fine, but I would use a slightly smaller container and place it inside of that nice large container, and be CERTAIN that they have drainage holes. I'm still working on an ID for it, but from what I have seen it really does look like a mature C. Elegans. I have about 8 C. Elegans ranging in size from a couple inches to almost 3 feet tall, and many sizes in between. I can tell you that the 3 foot tall mature ones that I have, while they do look the same, there is a decent amount of variation within the species, and in the look of the palm as it ages. My mature tall ones are like just large versions of the small ones, have the same leaf scars as yours, and the same leaf bases. Also, when they get taller like that they do have a bit of a crownshaft. It looks like I see an inflorescence spike in the photo too, and that too looks like the bloom spikes I get on my C. Elegans. Ill see if I cant get a photo of my large ones up for comparison.

Oh, and I forgot, if you go to repot it, let us know if those are 3 separate plants, or if they are connected at the base. It looks to me like they are kind of far apart and may in fact be 3 separate palms. If they are in fact connected (basically coming from the base of the large palm) then it is likely not C. Elegans.

they are 3 seperate plants but the roots have started to tangle themselves. i thought it would damage the plant if i tried to pull them apart

Ahhh... 3 separate plants. The more I look at it and the more I look at my own C. Elegans, that is what I think yours is. They can be separated fairly easy if you go slow and are very gentle. I usually do not like multi trunked palms myself, but when done right they do look nice, and yours looks nice. Very good spacing between them, and good height difference. So basically it is just up to you and what you prefer to look at. You definitely found a fantastic palm!
