Do Lemon Drop peppers really have citrus flavor?

If so, can somebody explain the science behind this.

Thanks

Yes...it also has a lot of heat.

There's a lot of things that "taste citrus" out in the world that's unrelated to citrus...even some leaves.

It's basically how our tongues/brains interpret certain oils/acids.

I'd say it definitely has a citrusy aroma. It's not tart like citrus but it gives a distinct aroma to anything you put it in. It also makes wonderful pepper jelly.

It does taste like citrus, but also it's a baccatum so it has that taste too (which to me tastes a little like sweat).

My 6 year old thread has come back to life! If been growing and buying Chiles since the post, so I can add to the discussion: The Lemon Drop Pepper is both hot and sweet. I've found 2 different types of these baccatums that are both called Lemon drops, or Aji Limon. Both have citrus flavor, but the smaller, thinner pod types have a much stronger, concentrated flavor. As with other tasty peppers it is hard to specifically describe the flavor, but it is definitely citrus like—something like lemon grass with a tiny hint of orange.

I think they do. I also think they're not really that hot. About like a serrano. Made a batch of pico yesterday with LD's and it was definitely different than with serranos...

The heat level depends on the batch. I've found the lemon drops can vary in heat but can get up to 4 to 5x the heat of a hot Serrano.

Serranos grown in old Mexico are hotter than ones grown in the "valley" in Texas, where most of the produce I use is grown. They're smaller too. Usually smaller means hotter in serranos. Just about like a tepin or pequin. Never ate a LD that was anywhere that spicy. Your mileage may vary...

Definitely a lemony taste to it. I grew these years ago and enjoyed them green and ripened!

Made two sauces recently, one from LD's and one from Yellow Fatalis. Using the same amount of chopped peppers and other ingredients, the Fatali stuff was WAY hotter. Same color though. Gotta label those containers to avoid surprises...

    Tom,

I'd love to see a good Fatalii sauce recipe if you don't mind sharing. I'm going to be overloaded with Fataliis soon. If you haven't tried CaJohn's "Fatalii Fire" sauce yet, it's AMAZING! I'd love to replicate it.

    Mike
