What do you want to protect it from? I've never worried about the sun or any of that with fruit tree grafts, the only problem I've had are deer rubbing their antlers.

Hi David. The grafts are small and not that thick.

I'd like to protect them from the cold and wind of the next couple winters until the branches get some girth to them.

I don't want to lose any grafts. I'm trying to be proactive.

Single-grafted fruit trees are reasonably sturdy. I think then for me, a better comparison is a new rose plant with several grafts - those things are pretty fragile until the plant gets established.

What I would be tempted to do - tie the branches together about a foot up from the graft with cotton clothesline rope. Going on the theory of a bundle of sticks is harder to break off than one stick. Maybe take the rope and loop it around each branch, around in a circle, then tie the rope ends together? Or just one big loop?

I dunno, its a thought. I've done support stuff - training small trees and new roses using cotton rope, and the rope disintegrates after a couple of years.

And I'd watch to see that the branches don't get too long, which would stress the graft as well.
