Congratulations, Vettin! I would give up on the one that's brown at the bottom. You might take an extremely sharp knife or a single edged razor blade and slice off the brown parts of the one that's callused to see if it works. If it does, you'll know you CAN do it should you encounter the next time. If it doesn't, you can try again, or just toss those out when they happen.

I tried the newspaper method on cuttings from several HT and floribundas and Rose de Rescht with zero succes with callusing. I planted them anyway. Last year using cuttings from spent blooms I had success with the callus part and even grew 9 bushes. I surprise myself with how happy I am to have them growing on my sidewalk! This year, the only thing I can think that was wrong is that every cane had some form of leaf on it, which I carefully pulled off. I know I got these right: it was cool, mostly in the 40-50's, just damp newspaper, root tone, wal-mart bag with a rubberband in a dark corner. I know I started too late, but Spring came about a month early and I just kept expecting freezing weather to slow things down. Out of 50 cuttings something has to root, right? Isn't there a law of nature that at least one has to grow into a bush?? There is always the milk jug and pop bottle thing to try a little later.
