Farmhouse Style living room, awkward placement, fix color and too dull.
Comments (34)You ALL have had GREAT suggestions! I've been showing your comments to my husband and he said the other day we can make into more of a formal living room when we make our garage into our tv/rec room someday (Before our kids are teenagers)! I found a pic of a similar sized room that I would love to copy below. I especially love the built in and the furniture. I've allready moved the long sofa along the window wall, and the loveseat/table opposing it with the reclinder at an angle near the piano/sofa side. Opens it up a lot and helps the flow more. As of right now since we just purchased our home we really don't have the funds to change anything drastically, but you're ideas give us projects to save up to do! I've hated the stove, hearth area since we got the house, the fung shui is just of from the front door placement to the stove area etc. The previous owners took their stove so we just have that stove becuase it was my husbands when he was growing up in his house:-) We've talked about redoing the fireplace by making it taller like bench height and bringing the stone up to the ceiling and possibly around to the kitchen. We both like the look of an actual fireplace over a stove, but for emergency reasons it's good to have a wood burning stove too...Our house is also all electric, (even the heat) do you know if a fireplace warms a house just as good as a stove? We actually are in the southwest and don't use the stove too often. We got a qoute from our concrete friend that changing the stone and height would be $3,000... which we want to use to add on to our front porch so we can watch the kids play in the yard. So I guess it's all in what our priority of projects first! Tempted to go buy some painters drop cloths and make them curtains for the ends of the windows.... seems like the cheap route! My husband and I would both love the DITCH the sconces on that long wall, and change them to nicer ones or just get rid of them, but then we would have holes in the wall! Anybody have an idea what it costs to do coferred ceiling, and or a built in like the photo below? I'm sure it's a chunk of change but we saved up a chunk to get this house pretty quick so we can save up a chunk again to do what we want to it! We like the idea of continuing the wood flooring, but at this stage in life with 3 kids (4 and under) the carpet is perfect for our needs at this point. Also below is a built in cabinet that we showed our cabinet friend that we like a lot, and he said a realistic price for something like that would be around $8,000.... lots of options! Love hearing your ideas, as I am not an idea person, i'm just good at gathering the details once I have heard the ideas!...See MoreNeed Help With Living Room: Colors, Windows and Furniture Arrangement
Comments (130)Ruth, I think your new color looks great! The lack of visual clutter allows your architecture and the backyard pool to shine. I agree you should keep accessories and decorations to a minimum, and fuss-free. One sneaky way to do that is to select accessories which are large in scale and only have a minimal number of them. They will make a big impact but not busy-up the room. I also agree that a large stunning piece of art over the tv would be great. But it needs to be truly beautiful and truly large. Lamps can become art if you select something large and pleasing to your eye. Beautiful cozy throws and pillows add depth and color, and can be changed out in summer/winter for a whole new look. Pale, lightweight cottons and linens in the summer and cozy, warm ones with rich tones in winter go a long way to creating a pleasant ambience. I think it's important that they not only look good, but feel soft and appealing for your family to use. I like pillows that can really be used! Throw 'em out when they get shabby, it's fun to select new ones. I'm not sure about the wall sconces by the tv. Have you considered tall, weighty candlesticks on the mantle on each side of the tv? Something about 2 feet tall. Mercury glass would be stunning, but black ones would also be nice. Ballard Designs has one that would work beautifully, the mercury glass would stand out beside the black tv. Picture attached. If you concentrate now on acquiring furniture and lamps in a pleasing arrangement, that will give you time to look at the room without clutter. You might find that the minimal look grows on you! And then you can add decor very slowly and be sure not to go overboard....See MoreKitchen Cabinets: White or Cherry?
Comments (62)We have the same dilemma. My kitchen is 14 yrs old, installed medium oak colored cabinets when I built the house. 3 years ago, installed Black Granite called (Verde Green) that has spots of brown in it. Decided on cabinet refinishing and we told the salesman we wanted Cherry colored and he agreed. My 1st floor is an open floor plan with a gold/cream colored walls. When I told a friend who has the same kitchen, what I was doing, he said "no way, go with White, Cherry is old looking and your house is contemporary. When the salesman came back to finalize, we were ordering and I brought up the white. My wife looked at me like I had 14 heads and the salesman said "I was going to suggest that, but you guys were hung on the Cherry". We have a tumble marble stone backsplash. He brought a cab door in and it's an antique white, glazed, with a little beige in the panel in the door which matches the backsplash perfectly. My wife looked and said "you know I always wanted white but didn't think you did". We have a large island, 7' x 3' and he said to make the island cherry with the antique white cabinets and thats what we decided. We have 6 weeks before the work is started and I'm getting 2nd thoughts. Went to a friends who just updated to Cherry and it looks very Rich and classy, but the kitchen was a little dark. Watched 2 HGTV shows and saw the remake people using Cherry cabinet. Very confused and don't know what to do....See MoreHow much does having a Brazilian Cherry hardwood floor date my house?
Comments (55)the wall colors in main part of the living area is SW Accessible Beige. Its a warmer neutral color that goes well with the BM White Dove Trim. The accent wall in the dining room was painted SW Smokey Blue which is a very neutral blue and then I did did some various glaze layers and finally a glazed stencil in white to get the look of a wallpaper without the commitment....See Moremiesenbacher
