what weed killer will work on Root Beer plant and 4 o'clocks ?

It's too difficult to dig these out where they are, so I need to know which weed killer might work on these guys. The root beer plants send out runners everywhere I don't want them and the 4 o'clocks have re-seeded in places I didn't catch in time. So, they've gotta be killed off ! any help would be very much appreciated.

    Round-Up will get 'em.

Round-up will work, but so will broad leaf plant killer full strength dripped directly on the cut stem of the plant. As I've mentioned before I carry it in a little yellow 'Can't Believe It's Not Butter' spray bottle in my gardening holster to use on those weedy plants that are too hard to pull up. I just cut them off and the ground, give them a little spray (more of a drip actually) and they don't come back.

It is my understanding that the broad leaf killer is not so much a poison, but a plant hormone. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Happy gardening the lazy way :-)

    Vinegar works too.

Ok, Barb. How does the vinegar work? I'd like to kill zillions of clover that are sprouting everywhere.

    #1 cause of accidental poisonings:
putting non-food products in FOOD CONTAINERS!!

Go to the dollar store and buy a $1.00 sprayer. It's not worth a buck to poison someone. Food containers should be used for food only!

That's very good advice Tally! Do they sell little bitty spray bottles anywhere?

Even if you have no children you never know when a thirsty child might wonder in. I'm remembering how my little sister turned up the bowl my brother's baby turtle was in and drank the water. Yuk.

Another time she drank some bleach mixed with water out of a cup that my Mom had used to spot-treat a stain. No adverse effects in either case. With the bleach the doctor told my Mom to have her drink lots of milk.

    Just be careful everyone.

Use 20% vinegar (available at most garden stores). It is much stronger than normal vinegar and I think it works by burning away the weeds. Works great!

20% vinegar is very, very caustic. It's drain-o strong. Wear full protection when you use it and be really careful about not getting it on you. It will also STERILIZE the soil. I use it for "crack weeds" in the sidewalk only. I like the "paint"(or use a tiny spray like Roselee does) roundup/herbicide method it only kills what you're aiming to kill and doesn't get herbicide where it isn't needed/wanted. It's much less stressful on the environment and a lot less expensive.
Label the heck outta your spray bottle too. I've had to take away my BT (empty) bottle away from the kids wanting to use it as a squirt bottle. I put warnings they can understand (the youngest one) on it now. PJ

    Weed torch.

Speaking of a weed torch I saw something interesting on another forum. This person grew annual vines on arched cattle panels and instead of trying to remove the old vines by hand each year they burnt them off with a torch. I have no idea how a weed torch looks or works, but it sounded like a real good time and work saver.

Thanks to all who answered. I'll keep trying everything until these guys give it up and keel over !!

weed torches are dangerous in the wrong hands esp. in dry areas. A neighbor of my father actually set fire to his land and it ended up burning 20 acres before the firefighters could put it out.

Just be careful with the vinegar, it kills grass, also.

You can use the regular grocery store vinegar too. It is best to use any weed killer when temps are in the 80's or higher. As far as the difference between products like the Round-Up or the vinegar or broad leaf weed killer, the first two are non-selective (they will kill what they are sprayed on, so don't spray on windy days) and the broad leaf weed killer won't hurt your lawn.

Wow! All this talk on how to kill it. You must be closer to the coast because I really want to make my root beer plant grow. I think its in the right location, but it just barely hangs on. Haven't had any problems with agressive spreading . . . yet anyway LOL.

I can understand killing the 4 o'clocks, they come up everywhere, but they are fairly easy to pull up after a rain.

Its hard for me to keep a Root beer plant alive in my area. I had one for several years, but one dry fall took care of it. It had sent out runners, but they all died that year.
