And yet more wildflower IDs :)

I've been meaning to go out and take more pics for some time now. So there are a few of these. I'm also posting some that I took today of known wildflowers on the gallery, if you'd like to take a look....LOL, today must have been picture taking catch up day for me!

I love this one. It's very delicate and not a *mass* bloomer but it stands about 24-30 inches and sways in the breezes.

This one looks pretty but it started invading the pastures about 2 years ago and it's a problem. This small paddock hasn't had a horse in it for a while though and they don't eat it.

{{gwi:1343553}}

I *think* this is a wild blackberry?

{{gwi:1343556}}

This is a beautiful grass, grows about 24-36 inches tall in shade or part sun.

I guess that's it for now. Thanks in advance for the help!

    1) I think is blue larkspur (Delphinium carolinianum)

I think I changed my mind on #1. Are the leaves spiny? If so, I vote Gayfeather (Liatris mucronata)

Does the yellow one in the 2nd picture look like a tiny daisy flower, and have lobed leaves? Is it coming from a single stalk or more like a bush?

    I don't think I've ever seen #3 or #4 before.

    1. Looks like it could be Verbena halei, but can't say for sure since it's blurry.
    2. Probably Wild mustard, not sure of latin name. It has taken over fields and such and is a very big pest.
    3. possibly dewberry (Rubus trivialis), though it seems to be missing a petal.

    I agree with fsadallas on 1,2 and 3. I don't know about #4.
I have the Texas Vervain (Verbena halei) in my flower garden even though it grows wild all over around here. I love the tiny flowers.

Here is a link that might be useful: Texas Vervain

Thanks Marti, the first one is definitely not gayfeather. I have tons of those later in the summer and they are very distinct. I didn't look up the larkspur or verbena but if, after this new picture, you all think it might be one of those, I will check it out:

Rather than coming from a single spike like the liatris, these branch a little bit. Also, the liatris flowers don't look well formed like these do...should have gotten a pic of the gayfeather last year! The flowers on this are maybe 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch wide. They are also varying in color from light purple to pink. Not on the same plant though.

Sorry for the poor quality of the pics but the camera finds it difficult (and so do I) to focus on such small targets, wind doesn't help THAT a bit!

    Yep, Verbena halei. :)

    I agree, that
    1. Verbena halei

2.not sure without a close up of the yellow but that is what a field of wild mustard would look like, lol

    3. I'm pretty sure is a dewberry

    4. Never have seen that, at least not that I remember

Sorry about the double post ya'll. I think the verbena is correct also, and the mustard as well.

We'll go with dewberry on the last one too :). How do they compare with blackberries in flavor, size etc. If they're not much, I will probably get rid of them since those thorns look lethal! Thanks for the help and I may just post the grass on the native grass forum :)

    Kristi

They are lethal, lol I love them both but I can't tell a difference. I've only had wild ones tho
You could make me a cobbler of each and we could have a taste test, LOL

someone on this page was wanting dewberries. You might try searching to see if you can find them. They'd be very happy!

Jolana, I have a mean double crusted cobbler recipe! Sounds like a plan to me :).

I'll do a search on here for the Dewberry person. It seems like I remember they lived pretty far away though.

Anyhoooo, you guys are great. I don't know how you all find all these plant names but I sure appreciate it!

We used to go pick dewberries on the country roads when I was a kid. They are like blackberries, only a little smaller. We'd mash them up with milk and sprinkle sugar on them for breakfast, or make cobblers out of them.

    Mmmmm. :)

I used to have wild dewberries in Louisiana and we made cobbler, wine, and jelly out of them. They were delicious.

It was Lonestar7 that was looking for the Dewberries. They live in Corpus and had said that Mexia was too far to drive for them.....Oh well, guess Jolana and I will have to eat them all ;).

    Kristi

Yummy, that works for me, lol

If anyone in my area want any, we have hundreds, lol

I'll help eat the cobbler too!

I'll bring the whipped cream for the cobbler ---yummmmm!

You guys are so funny :). I don't know when they ripen, but I'll be out there fighting the birds for them!

Carrie, I forgot to mention it on the "check in" thread, but thanks for your concern about Mom. She's fine, she just gets very shaken up. But then, if I had seen rotation headed right for my house like she did, I'd be pretty shaken up about it too. I didn't mean to derail the thread, but just wanted to thank you.
