How exciting! Does the jar afford enough room for the wings to expand fully? If you haven't already you might gently provide a stick for it to clutch while it's wings are getting fully pumped up and hardened. As you can imagine they are easily frightened and may try to get away from you and fall and injure their wings so it is a delicate operation to handle the situation to keep them from falling. I'm writing this mostly for those who haven't yet 'birthed' a butterfly as I'm sure yours has already completed its transformation. It is so much fun to watch them pump up their wings and fly away :-)

Okay, he's gone :). I got him out of the jar with a stick and took him to my butterfly bush. He hung around for a little bit, flexing his wings then with a puff of a breeze, he was gone. Male black swallowtail.

Hi Pam, yup the eggs hatched and they were little teeny wasps of some sort. I released them the day they were hatching but they were too tiny to tell what kind they were. Oh, they were black wasps....lol that's all I know.

So that's what tiny black wasp eggs look like ;-) Wasps are cool, I like them much more than the bazillion spiders hanging from my trees.

thank you for the story! I've watched 6 black swallowtail cats devour my dill, but didn't know where to look for the crysalis. Don't you know, I'll be inspecting the brugs for more than buds tomorrow.

BTW my dill is in a pot. I watched one big cat practically jog around the rim 3 times. He stopped, I leaned a stick up to the edge, and I didn't get to see that again with the others.

They are magic!
