It might be a type of Grouse. You could try putting it on the Bird Watching forum to get more experts to see it.

I'm almost certain this is a female Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus).

I agree with Northern Bobwhite Colinus virginianus. I know that quail hunting in south Texas generally refers to "Bobwhite Quail" a/k/a the Northern Bobwhite, "Scaled Quail", and a few other quails.

That is so neat! Are there quail in Fort Worth or is it a desert bird here in TX too?

The range of the Northern Bobwhite includes all of Texas except for a small portion west of Odessa and Del Rio. Its population in Fort Worth is probably small, but they may be present in areas of native prairie.

Is this the bird who literally calls

Bob White! as clear as can be?

If so, I heard one for the first time in decades the last time I was at Hare's nursery on the far west side of Arlington. I asked a birder and he said there are some down near I 20 too.

I had no idea he looked like this.
