new: look out! named poppy robin

It's time...why didn't we think of this before! I'd like to start a poppy robin, named varieties only, just so we really know what we're getting and can cross some of these beauties off our want lists! I know I'm not the only one...SO, anybody interested, lets list here all the named varieties (please, no 'pink with lavender blotch' types, just named ones we can look up info on) we can enter in (no more than 5 packets of any one type per person, just to keep it interesting) and also list our wants. Sound good?

I may myself later for starting this, lol, but I think it's gonna be fun! So, basically:

no no-names

can be oriental, breadseed, shirley, iceland, california, whatever. Just poppies.

no mixes (unless it's something we could look up)

lets not be stingy- at least 1/4 tsp. quantities

I don't want to make this harder than it needs to be, but you know...I just want to make sure everybody gets something really cool. You get as many back as you send in. Hopefully we get things from our want lists, but it depends on what's sent in. If you have something from somebody's want list, lets keep it a secret and just send it in (labeled with the person's name would be helpful). By NOT listing what we have here, you won't have to worry about 25,000 people emailing you privately to give them what you've got, lol. (We keep it on the down low, hehehe) But list your wishes here.

Here are my wishes:

hi Amanda - I'd like to be part of this too. Sherry in Sunny Central Oregon (we had our 1st snowfall today in the Ochoco oh-cha-coe Valley). Some more named varieties of the opium poppy (papaver somniferum) are the 'Clouds' Red - Rose - Pink - Peach - White - Black and the whole color range of the laciniatum's aka Fluffy Ruffles including Swansdown and Venus. There is also Lauren's Grape which was brought to market by Lauren Springer a renowned author from Colorado. Also there is the Red & White Striped one as well as Flemish Antique which is similar but in my mind nicer the the R&W. What about Hens and Chicks and Giganteum. Then there are the 2 Bombasts Red and Rose that were hybridized for the cut-flower market in Germany many years ago. Also we should include Danish Cross or the frilly petaled one Danebrog Lace and the double form of it called Clown and/ or Oase. Then there are the plants that are grown for opium in the middle east: Peshwar and Persian White and we must not forget the Taz's (Tasmanians) I almost forgot Orange Chiffon and the golden one called Golden Sun. There is one more of my favorites that I'll have to list - it is Frosted Salmon. It is a true beauty. My oh my - we could go on forever. So let me know how this will work. I'm too excited! Sherry

Okay, everybody: I've received several excellent suggestions to improve this and get more people involved. (I've never hosted a robin before...I needed the tips!) Here are some changes:

#1: You don't have to send 1/4 tsp. I know poppy seeds are tiny, but some of these unique ones are hard to come by and 1/4 tsp. is quite a lot. So, just try to send 20 seeds per variety you send. I'll try to work it out so that the amount you send in per pack is the amount you get back, just so that more people can play and everything's fair. Send in 20 'Lauren's Grape' seeds, (for example) and get 20 seeds of something (hopefully!) you're looking for.

#2: Please list what you HAVE to offer, so people feel more comfortable in joining. I agree that going in blind isn't such a great idea, lol! Here's what I have to add to this swap:

    Lauren's Grape
    Drama Queen
    Burnt Orange
    Carneum
    Coral Chiffon
    Cyclops
    Danish Flag
    Danebrog
    Giganteum
    Hens & Chicks
    Lavender Peony
    Pink Peony poppy
    Red Peony poppy
    Persian Blue
    Persian White
    India White
    Oriental 'Scarlet'
    Hungarian Breadseed
    Tasmanian poppy
    Turkish large
    Iceland poppy 'gartford giants'
    Iceland poppy 'red sails'
    Double spanish 'tangerine gem'
    p. atlanticum- soft orange
    p. atlanticum- 'moroccan poppy'
    CA poppy 'mother of pearl'
    CA poppy 'tequila sunrise'
    CA poppy 'mission bells'
    CA poppy 'white linen'
    CA poppy 'thai silk mix'
    CA poppy 'purple gleam'
    CA poppy 'mikado'
    CA poppy 'gold rush'
    p. rhoeas - red
    p. rhoeas- orange picotee
    p. rhoeas- shirley double mix

I hope this makes everybody feel better! I've done TONS of individual trades, and I know this can be a GREAT robin! I've got these people interested for sure:

    Some details:

I know everybody's going to be busy in the next several weeks, but I'd like to have everything sent to me by DECEMBER 12, which is the second monday of December. That gives everybody three weeks to the day to get their seeds to me, and I'll match up and get them back out by Sat. 17th at the VERY LATEST, for some extra Christmas surprises! I'm so excited! Poppies are great for direct sowing in the fall and winter months; we'll all have great things to show off in the late spring and summer!

    Hi everybody~
We need some more takers still! We can play with just those who have joined already, but we'll get a bigger mix if more people join!
So far, I have seeds from plant_tender and pattygrow5, plus my own seeds. We have some great things already!
I just wanted to post an update, to fill everybody in on what's happening, and to bump this thread back up to the top! Come on in, the water's great! lol

    Hi again, Amanda,

I've been eyeing this poppy thread for quite awhile, and I would like to join, but basically, I only have common stuff or things sent to me in trade. I do have a bunch of different named varieties from these trades...like red ruffles poppy, double coral peony poppy, papaver somniferum, etc.

Let me know if you think these types of things would enchant your other takers.

    Happy Holidays,
    Jodi
