Turtle wax to protect from snakes?

I just read on sialis.org that you can put Turtle Wax on the BB house pole to keep snakes from climbing the pole. Has anyone tried this and do you know if it works? If so, how often does it need to be applied? I have baffles on my own BB houses, however, our local club is about to put up quite a few new houses and unfortunately baffles aren't feasible at this time. However, we were able to purchase a few Heath SB-3 Mounting Squirrel Baffles, that are plastic and much less expensive than the typical baffle. Hopefully this one will work for snakes, we will see. Thank you for your input! Oh, and by the way, if it were up to me, no new bb houses would go up without a baffle!

    Hi Lori
Dont waste your time and money the wax will work only for a few wks....
Invest in garden netting that will stop snakes you can but the netting at
home Depot the netting with 1/2 inch holes.. wrap around pole with plastic wire ties. Cheap and the role of netting will go far. I have saved many bluebirds
over the years. I used PVC waxed and it just caused failures. You will find trapped snakes alive too and must cut them loose if you can. Snakes trapped
are often food for vultures. ---Ray

just my 2 cent's worth: the club shouldn't put up more boxes than they can baffle, and they need to use raccoon baffles. If we can't protect these precious creatures then we shouldn't offer nest boxes to them. There is a boy scout club near me that built houses and none are baffled, and most are mounted to wood fencing. How many baby bluebirds and moms were raccoon meals so the scouts could learn only part of bluebird hosting. I think it's just collateral damage to them, sad..
