What kind of snake is this? (metro Atlanta, GA)

Hi Everyone,

Wondered if anyone would be kind enough to help me identify the snake in the picture....I've seen a couple of these in the back yard over the last few years (they have always been small; babies I assume).

We have a very nosy beagle, and I'm worried he's going to get bit, and would feel better if I knew what these were. I don't know if you can tell by the picture, but the snake is probably a baby...maybe 8" when stretched out, and maybe a cm in diameter at it's thickest point.

I think if you click on the picture, it will zoom in for a better view.

Any help would really be appreciated!!!

Thanks!

It is a Midland Brown Snake. They are small and harmless. The ones you are seeing are adults. Adults are only around 7 to 10 inches long.

Thanks a lot Wayne; that makes me feel a LOT better!!

My beagle was in the back yard about 10 minutes ago, with his snout shoved down a small hole....lol.

    Thanks again!!

i have , what i now know to be a black racer snake, that has been coming up into my back porch for the last 3 days in a row, the last time he came right up to my sliding glass doors and actually sat up like a cobra does and waved back and forth as it looked like it was looking under my coutch, they have sorta big eyes , i know they are not posion but that was so creepy to see this, but why does it keep coming back, i heard it might be looking to lay eggs or somthing and once that is done they will always return to the same place, any truth to this? thanks
