It's a very lovely, good quality mahogany gentleman's dresser. Likely made around 1915 to 1930.

Hello - a long-time lurker here, with no definitive information, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were a little older than turn-of-the century...it has a late 1890's look to me. Good look with your research - it's a handsome piece of furniture. Penny

I think peegee is correct about the age. The door on your gentleman's chest is the size for storing his top hat. Since those went out of vogue at the turn of the century, I would say your chest was made before 1900.

I based my asessment on the very square lines of the piece, and the applied decorations which were often used in the early part of the 20th century. I also considered the brasses. Of course they could have been replaced, but that's unlikely. Men wore hats daily well into the 1950's and a derby hat of 1920 needed a place to be as much as a top hat.
And those little round feet are also not often found before 1900.
And another factor, the OP said it had been her grandfather's. My grandfather was born in 1885 and married in 1905, and while I don't believe he ever wore a top hat in his life, he had a dresser with a hat box.
The year the OP's grandfather was born would add more information.

The brass looks original to me. Also, some pieces from that period did have casters, as evidenced by this photo.

Here is a link that might be useful: Eastlake settee with casters

I don't believe the dresser in question has casters.
That settee is wonderful!! I could find a spot for that!

I have a small dresser from whatever era this dresser was made. Brass very identical. Style as well. Same joinery and same latch details. I would say well before 1930s. I'd say somewhere 1890s to 1900. I found some paper cut outs in the drawer of my little dresser, the dress was right at 1900s appropriate.

I'm not an expert in antique furniture, but it's what I collect the most of. My paternal g'father was a furniture maker and most active in his craft from the early teens to mid twenties of the last century. This style really predates what I have seen made by his company in that era.

Linda, if you look closely at the full photo with the door open, you'll see the casters I'm speaking of.

You may be right....it may have casters...but I am not sure...hard to see.
However the casters don't automatically put a piece in the pre-1900 era. My opinion is based on the straight lines of the piece and the applied decorations.
I will be interested to see what the OP says about the age of her grandfather who originally owned it.

    Hi I am the OP
My grandfather was born 1919 or 1920 Those are casters on the bottom. The drawer handles are origianl to the dresser, but age and daily use has worn them out. Some handles have broke.well not the handles but the bolts that held them in place.Thank you so far for all the info everyone has provided
