is it odd or 'wrong' to have a powder room in the kitchen

hi - newbie to the forums! Love them! I am learning sooo juch! Anyway....

We are in the process of an addition/remodel and want to put a powder room in the kitchen. Is this normal? Gross? Ok?

What are your thoughts?

If that's the only place you can have it, then do it. But, honestly? I personally don't like having the powder room right off the kitchen, or off the diningroom for that matter. I don't think it's just a food thing because my preference would always be to have the bathroom off of a hallway rather than off of a family room or other room. I think it's more private that way and makes everyone more comfortable.

We once had a half bath very near the kitchen, and many of our guests took me aside to ask me quietly if we had another bathroom they could use. I'd guess I'd try to find another way.

It's generally considered unsavory...Our last house had one like that and it always felt *odd*. Can you relocate it maybe under stairs (powder rooms don't take that much space) or somewhere else?

It's not ideal, but sometimes the layout gives you no other choice. I gutted my kitchen and super small bath (just a toilet in a 30" x 55" room. I enlarged the bathroom, but couldn't relocate it given the layout of the rest of the main floor. It's right through this door, the toilet is around the corner:

If you're going to put a bathroom right off the kitchen, I have 3 recommendations. Use a solid core door, stuff as much insulation as possible into the wall cavity for sound proofing, and put in a cheap, loud exhaust fan.

we have a powder room in the same location as codnuggets. It is very handy on a day to day basis. When guests come we tell them where the restrooms are and they decide. Never been a problem. Not to hijack this but I love your pendant lights, Joe. May I ask where you got them and/or brand? Are they black rods? Just what I need!!

flyleft - My fabricator who provided the granite called it Exotica D'oro, but nobody else recognized that name. It's a rare variety of Lapidus from Brazil and is now extinct. I got 2 of the last 3 slabs my fabricator had and got a great deal to boot! When I found it, I shot out some feelers to see if anyone had seen it before and nobody recognized it. We absolutely LOVE it, and so does everyone that walks into the kitchen.

hamster - the lights are these cheapo fixtures from Lowe's, their standard Portfolio line. 20 bucks a piece! I scrapped the globes and rims and picked up the cool mocha marble bell globes, also from Lowe's for about $8. The fixtrues have an oil rubbed bronze finish and are adjustable height (4 piece down rod). They look expensive but are far from it.

We have one too. Our KD tells us that code requires 2 doors from kitchen to bath (1 door being the bathroom door - and a doorway with no door can count too.) Since we have only 1 door like it is above, we plan to leave the bath as is until the final kitchen inspection and then we can remodel it some.) We live in So. Calif.

Wow, joe, it's just beautiful. Great fabricator you have, to be having stone choices like that hanging around :)

Interesting about that code, perqq. I wonder if it's national--our house was a D.R. Horton (UGH--we were naive and rushed--relocation) that had the powder room coming directly off the kitchen, but it was in the SE. I wonder if they have to use different house layouts in CA...?

We have a powder room on the other side of our kitchen, and I never felt it was odd until I read this post. The kitchen/food prep area is on one side of the kitchen and the breaksfat table is on the other side of the kitchen, with that wall being the shared wall with the powder rom. No one has ever mentioned it as odd. It is actually the guest bathroom, complete with shower. I loved our house, but now I am embarrassed because I never thought of it.

Thanks codnugget for the pendant info. I'll check it out!
I am wondering if most older homes don't have the restroom right off the kitchen. Our home was built in 1906. The bathroom was originally a narrow porch. When indoor plumbing was installed, they probably put the bath where they could fit it in.

My parents had their powder room off the breakfast nook. The odd-wrong factor was that if someone used the bathroom during a meal, they´d often re-emerge from the room with the toilet gurgling in the background. Just not too appealing. So they changed the door to a different wall, and it now opens into the mud room.

    Codnuggets,
One more question about your pendants--how high do they hang above the island?

Jesemy, they are 32 inches above the island top. I'm not sure if that's standard or whatnot, but I used all 4 rod pieces and that's where they ended up. The 2 similar lights hanging over the sink are 41 inches above the counter (3 rod pieces).

I have an 1820-30 one-bedroom, 1.5 bath cottage, one room wide, three rooms deep -- with no hallway -- on the ground floor. the layout is, moving from the street: first room is the living room, second room is the dining room, and third room is the kitchen. The stairs leading to the second level (formerly attic space, now the bedroom and a full bath) are located in the kitchen, and yes, I have a teeny tiny powder room (my architect calls it a 1/4 bath) under the stairs: so, in the kitchen. The house is small (1050 square feet), so I was grateful just to have a powder room downstairs at all. I never thought about this question of it being in the kitchen before today! I have a full bath upstairs, and so I just tell my guests where each bath is, and they go to whichever one they want or whichever is available. One good tip another response mentioned: there is a very loud exhaust fan in that powder room. It was there when I bought the house, and I am glad to have it. Definitely a good idea. :-)

this is where you use the "courtesy flush".
Codnuggets...I found the pendants but not your replacement globes. Still looking.

hamster, the globe selection may vary by store and might well change frequently, who knows with the BB guys. I'll check around the stores in my area next time I visit them and see if they are still in circulation. I think they were called Mocha Swirl or Mocha Marble or Mocha something.

Codnuggets:The one LOWE'S I was at didn't have either. I did find the pendant online. The inventory at the store was very low at Lowes;). No one around to help.

No one around to help you at Lowe's? Shocking!

They clear stuff out a lot. I bought a matching 5-light chandelier at the same time. I broke one of the globes and went back to get a replacement and ended up buying another entire chandelier because it was the last one and on clearance at 50% off. Now I have lots of spare parts.

I'll still look next time I go.

My pleasure. The backsplash is 4" Noce tumbled marble and a similar mosiac that comes in 8" sections, right off the shelf at Lowe's. I forget the grout color, it's Mapei and it's what was recommended I use (probably by Bill V). It looks really gray in the photos, but it's more subtle in person. Just enough contrast to highlight the diagonal joints but not enough to draw attention away from the tile. All sealed up with some other product Bill recommended :) Honestly, what would we do without Bill and Mongo?!?
