A Modern-Aire/Vent Hood Question

I've been perusing these boards for months making decisions on all my appliances, but I've run up on my own problem that I couldn't find an answer for elsewhere.

Due to everyone's effusive praise of Modern-Aire on the board, I consulted with them via e-mail about a custom vent hood. Or liner, I suppose. It'll be mounted on the wall, and I'll have a cabinet piece for it to be integrated into.

At any rate, I was quoted over $3000 for a PSL-040 and an EMIL800. Adding $400 for the silencer/damper and who-knows-what for freight, this is significantly more expensive than I expected. I know Modern-Aire makes a premium product, and I also realize I've opted for the more expensive in-line option, but this seems way out of whack.

I admittedly haven't e-mailed them back, but I don't know what the EMIL800 is. The motor itself (Fantech FKD-8XL) is about $400 online. If the liner is the PSL-040, what am I missing here? Would the in-line blower really be making this that expensive? Any advice is welcome.

I don't know how you got a quote that high, but that does not seem the going rate for Modernaire. I'd check other dealers. If you are going for an internal blower like the one required in the Kobe, you will still get a quieter, higher quality internal blower with Modernaire. Modernaire has a couple of other nice features a cook usually likes. Both the lights and blowers have infinitely variable switches, which for my wife was a must have. Plus the baffles, besides being an attractive design feature, have no sharp edges and can be handled with ease.

This place is kind of expensive, but not nearly as much as where you got quoted.

Apologies! I see now there is a vent hood question down the page a bit. I missed it. In light of some suggestions there re: Prestige, Elica, Best, maybe I should clarify my questions?

1. Is the price I was quoted way out of line? Especially if the EMIL800 is only the motor?

2. Any other recommendations specifically for liners for wood hoods?

Do you mean a hood insert like this, or just the liner? I am probably going to be getting this one by Kobe. The price seems reasonable and the Kobe brand gets good reviews here.

Thanks for the reply! Good question. Honestly, I thought "liner" or "hood insert" were the same things. Apparently not?

It seems like what you've linked is what I'm after, though, and it looks like a good price. At $800-ish dollars, it certainly looks a lot nicer upfront than what I imagined. Is there such a drop-off in quality? Or, at least, am I missing much by not having the in-line motor?

I appreciate the link. Firstly, though, I got my quote from Modern-Aire itself, via e-mail. It seems like, if anything, they might be cheaper than independent dealers, but I could be wrong.

Kitchen Source does seem to have some lower prices, but those look like they're on the Mesh Liners, which look to be different than the Pro Series I was quoted. Are they better, worse, or only aesthetically different?

That said, some of the interior blower setups approach $3,000 themselves, and since I was advised that the in-line option would be more expensive, I guess I can see how my quote could be more than $3,000. The Free Shipping aspect would certainly be enticing, if I could only match up the model numbers. I can't find anything like "PSL-040" and "EMIL800". Still, something like Kobe might be a better option.

Anyone else on Modern-Aire vs. others or internal vs. in-line or independent dealers?

You're right. I wouldn't go with mesh filters either.
