Low water flow from Frigidaire refrigerator. Any ideas?

Hi,

I have a 10 year old Frigidaire refrigerator with a water and ice dispenser. I always changed the water filter every six months or so but lately I've noticed that the flow is very slow even though I just put a new filter in. My water pressure is at 65psi and water is supplied via a 1/4 copper supply that is hooked up to a ball valve (not a saddle clamp).

I'm curious if there is a pump or valve inside the refrigerator that may be wearing out or not performing as it should. Any advice is truly appreciated.

Thanks!

Joe

I'll bet that normal pressure is the driving force and that there is no pump because there is no need for one with normal pressure: that is how all other water outlets work (faucets, taps, supply hoses, etc).

Inside a 1/4" thin pipe you'll see it is a very small diameter tube in reality. I'll bet a little bit of organic matter has stuck to the inner wall and narrowed the diameter to the point where it has effectively blocked the flow down to a dribble. After ten years this is probable. ((For further evidence that this is probable, search in the plumbing forum for posts about sludge / organic matter in water heaters.)

"... water pressure is at 65psi and water is supplied via a 1/4 copper supply that is hooked up to a ball valve (not a saddle clamp)."

If you buy my hypothesis, to test it out and clean out the supply line is actually quite easy (Once you turn off the whole house water and drain your pipes which is the big upheaval in your daily routine.)

Post this question in the plumbing forum.

I had a situation once where the icemaker in my Kenmore stopped making ice. Actually, the cubes were very small. I first changed the filter. No change. I then changed the solenoid valve. no change. I then ran a small length of pipe from the solenoid valve into a bucket and watched the water flow when the icemaker cycled. Little or no flow.

I then went back to the water source valve. I dismantled it and found that over the 10-12 years, minerals had built up inside of it, blocking the flow.

I replaced the valve and all was well and has been since. You might want to try the same thing yourself.

Oh, yes. If you're getting sufficient flow for ice, you problem might be that the line is freezing inside the door.

I believe the inlet valve has a screen in the end of it. Over the years you may have some trash in it that has slowed the flow. Disconnect the line to the ref. and see how the water flows from the copper line into a bucket.
If this just started when you changed filters(?) then maybe you have a bad filter.

Have you had any other trouble with your ref in the past 10 years? I bought a new Frigidaire about a year ago and so far like it fine--I just hope it lasts.
