Help with sitting area/formal living room

We just moved into a new house and my mother moved with us. She is going to use the formal living room as her sitting area. She has a couple of large pieces she would like to have in the room. One of them is an antique mail carriers table. It's 6 feet wide. She also has a hutch/armoire that holds her sewing. There isn't a cable outlet and we couldn't get one easily installed. The room is a bit odd shaped and we don't know how to set it up. She wants new furniture but doesn't know what and needs more lighting. No overhead light in the room. The front wall has a large window (12 feet 9 inch wall with 6 feet 3 inch window). Side wall is 14 feet 3 inches and the wall across from the window is 7 feet and then there is an angled wall/stairs. We want the room to be nice as its the first room you see when you come in the door but also functional for her. Last thing, she is on the shorter side and doesn't like tall or deep furniture.

Thank you for any and all ideas. We have been here about 8 weeks and I am ready to feel settled.

Since Mom likes the vintage furniture, how about a "parlour" look? A "fainting" couch..so Mom can stretch out, and a small chair/ottoman with floor lamp for reading. Then a small round glass coffee table between the two? Beautiful drapes and wall art that nods to vintage. What colors are you thinking of? Oh..if you could, I'd consider putting a wall where the stairs are and put french doors to the room. That way, Mom could have privacy and quiet, or close the doors off if she's in the middle of a messy sewing project.

Love the sorting table but it will probably always look cluttered, so the tucked away wall is best for that. Will mom entertain guests in her room? If so, I'd try a loveseat and small arm chair with a coffee table and at least two lamps - maybe one a table lamp and the other a floor lamp. If she enjoys movies, why not get a small tv and dvd player for her?

Here is another arrangement, but I'd include an ottoman. Some cable companies now offer "wireless" room to room so maybe mom can have "cable" in the room.

Gosh, I think Carolyn's arrangement would work very nicely. I wouldn't be surprised if the sewing armoir could stay right where it is - next to the chairs.

I think the slim silhouette of the chairs Darzy posted would be perfect for this room.

I love the layout above from Carolyn. I wish I had things to put in place to see how it looks like that. Now to find chairs and tables. Thanks so much.

Just be careful to buy the size chairs and sofa indicated. I'm glad you like it and hope it works out perfectly for you. Please let us know.

I will. What do you think of these chairs? BUT it is 31x33. She sat in it today and really liked the support it gave her back and her feet touched the floor. I like the style of the ones above but I want her to be comfortable too. We are going out looking more in the morning but know more about what to tell them we need as far as sizes go. Recomendation on table sizes?

So we moved a few things around and borrowed a few things from the house just to try the layout. What do you think? We really like it.

I'm sorry to say that the armoire has to go! Also the boxes under the P.O. table. But for a mock up you're doing great! Please declutter the desk level of the P.O. table. I just know that the US Gov't would not approve the items there!

The comfy 31x33" chairs will work if you don't get a sofa longer than shown in the drawing (78"). I'm all for comfort and like the chairs you found. Are you getting a solid color fabric or a print. Best to decide on sofa before buying chairs so that you can coordinate the colors.

I promise she will. She is still unpacking and organizing her sewing supplies. Lol. Here is how it looked before we moved.

    Oh, area rug?

An area rug can come after you select your sofa and chairs, or it can come first and provide inspiration, as long as you know that the sofa and chairs are availalbe in colors that relate to the rug.

What a charming room! I love the mix of antiques with the contemporary rug. I'm pretty sure that your mom must be delighted with it!

The room is FAB. U. LOUS. With one teeny weeny exception. (I'm sure Carolyn knows what I'm going to say.) If you can bear it, because I know how much work it will be, could you take the whole gallery wall and move it down about 6 inches?

Lol. The good thing is we are moving in 4 weeks so I will remember that if we recreate the room in the new house. :)
