Best way of selling items

Greetings,

First time poster here in Antiques, I usually hang out in Kitchen and Appliances.

Anyway, I have a rather large collection of sterling silver flatware that I have inherited. It is Gorham, from a discontinued line. It is, I believe, a 12 piece place setting with a number of serving pieces, as well as a few odd items. My wife and I have no real interest in this service, and are interested in selling it.

I also have a set of knives with real (I am 99.9% sure) ivory handles and stainless blades. I know their are laws about selling ivory items, but hope they don't apply to products this old (probably 50 years)

My questions is, what's the best way to sell something like this? Dealer? Auction house, Replacement company, E-bay, what? We live in Florida, if that makes a difference.

I don't need the money tomorrow.

Where in FL are you? The Silver Queen in Largo buys estate silver but you may not get top dollar. But you might contact them to see what they offer and with that figure in mind go to antique stores that sell those items and see if they will buy the pieces outright for more than you were offered before OR see if they'll let you sell them on consignment.

A great website that I use is Ruby Lane. I also live in Florida and work in a collectibles/antique shop. If you need any additional help or haven't sold your pieces my email address is jillybeanmc@comcast.net. One of my girlfriends buys alot of sterling and may be able to help you.

jbean, I see you're also in zone 9. Anywhere near Tampa?

I agree, Ruby lane is a great site for referencing.

The reason I mentioned Silver Queen is that I don't think the sterling pattern has been identified by the OP and SQ can do that for him.

Actualy the pattern is Gorham's Rondo.

I don't want to break the rules of Gardenweb, so I specifically did not publish a lot of information, as I am not trying to sell it here.
