How would you spend $10k to improve this kitchen?
Comments (342)the backsplash turned out to be my favorite part, I don't know how to describe it, it looks so "organic", the color variation and the imperfections of the hand making process make it really interesting....See MoreRefrigerator - function or form?
Comments (12)I am perfectly happy with a counter depth fridge, it definitely holds plenty. I have a french door fridge and it is a pain to keep the freezer drawer organized. I made my daughter smoothies every morning for ages and didn't find it difficult to keep the frozen fruit there - ours does have a pull out tray though I don't like how it functions, but the fruit was generally on top waiting to be grabbed as it got used daily. I also have a second fridge in the basement (we moved the old one down there when we redid our kitchen) and I do like having the extra storage, but that isn't so much about fitting things into the fridge as about keeping things we don't need right away (second carton of OJ or milk, beer/soda which we rarely drink but have on hand for guests, freezer items that aren't needed every day) out of the way so the fridge is less crowded (plus that stuff stays fresher longer in a fridge that isn't opened several times a day). Love not having the fridge stick out into the room, it looks better and because of the configuration of my kitchen it also functions better....See MorePOLL: How do you shop for appliances?
Comments (69)I am a contractor and what I do is take appliances that have withstood the test of time, when renovating kitchens for customers who simply no longer like the look of them, and use them in my own kitchen renovations. I don't like the idea of items going to landfill when they work well but just no longer have a cutting edge look. When I sell my house the new owners will be able to switch they out if they want to but for me they have proven to be reliable (from the fact that they are still working years later). When something does go wrong I can usually easily find a fix and parts online and do the repairs and if irreparable, (only happened once), I just locate another serviceable replacement at little to no cost. I guess you'd say my guiding criteria is saving something from being thrown out when working fine. They may not look the best but I want my kitchen to have an organic look and feel anyhow and don't like the whole "matching" look at all, so my philosophy works well with my aesthetic....See MoreKeep long skinny island or cut it??
Comments (131)@Queen ofPrincesses: Looking real nice IMO...... You are doing a fabulous job - fer sure..... working through all those decisions. The space 36" is just perfect as it also is nice room for anyone with crutches, walker or even a wheelchair to scoot around the island. As to the pendants - after you take a break - check out something you can hang yet scoot over with something like rope or chain to rebalance the light over the island. Something like below that allows you to hook it up to one of those 3 electric mounts, then have fun placing the swag hooks around the center of your kitchen. The other two electric boxes can be be dismantled and the ceiling redone in that area. You can also build your own with a light canopy to cover all three electrical holes in the ceiling and center it over the island. Then add your own lights whether clean glass, stained, old bottles, ombre or frosted, etc. They can be different sizes and shapes. Something to consider that adds interest. There are all sorts of prices from less than $50 per light to over $500 for a ready made to order. Enjoy your "new" kitch!...See Moretsy72001
