Real life with CD fridge?

We are building a new home (not custom) and I think the kitchen layout will dictate a counter depth fridge. Changing the configuration of the cabinets or recessing the wall is not an option. We will have plenty of clearance in the front, but the fridge will be next to a corner pantry.

I want to know what the smaller size means in day to day living. Can you fit a pizza box in there? A platter? a turkey? I think I prefer a french door style, not side by side.

Does the water/ice dispenser on the front also eat up space? I see from other posts that many of you do not have the external dispenser so I am curious what you do for filtered water.

We are a family of 3, entertain only for the holidays, and I am a very basic cook. We also don't drink a lot of sodas.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Thank you!

We have been living with our FD CD for about 8 months now and we love it. We can fit a pizza box, or even a turkey, but be aware that you have to move a lot things around (or out) to make room for a turkey. That being said, I don't believe we could live with this as our only fridge as a family of 4. But we have always had a second refridgerator in the garage as a place to hold all of the extra milks / orange juices / soda's that we stock up on from places like Costco.

Regarding water/ice dispenser, they do take up a lot of room and IMO is a giant waste of space in addition to not looking nice. All CD fridges that have a built in ice maker in the freezer should have a small water dispenser on the interior of the refridgerator that dispenses nice cold filtered water without taking up any room.

We've had the Samsung french door for a couple of months. Family of 4 with 2nd fridge in the basement which is a must for us, but we had it with our previous full depth fridge as well (side by side).

We have to rearrange things a bit to fit a large pizza hut pizza box in. The logical spot for a pizza box hits one of the door cubbies and won't fit. Haven't tried a turkey.

For this particular fridge, we have more trouble with freezer space than fridge. Before we bought it I compared our full depth fridge and freezer space with the samsung. The fridge wasn't all that different, but the freezer was significantly smaller.

Having said all that, we love our new fridge and would definitely get it again. But we would probably be happy with lots of new fridges (for instance, the french door, bottom freezer configuration is much better than our old side-by-side). In our kitchen layout, the counter depth really helps traffic flow, so it really makes sense for us.

We got the whirlpool CD sxs and love it. I am the person who always wanted the biggest frig I could get so I was leary. I must say we have a garage frig for all the soft drinks but everything else fits fine. (and they would fit if I squeezed. We are down to the two of us but have a lot of company. We always have a lot of leftovers etc. and it is not a problem. Pizza fits.

I'm in the same place you are and am *trying my best* to hold out for the new line of Samsung fridges in hopes their new CD FD model will have the newer technology thinner insulation as their 29 cu. ft. model fridges do. The Samsung CD FD fridge is - from what I can tell - the largest on the market in terms of fresh foods space (which is of most importance to us since we have an extra freezer in the basement) and I like that unlike all counter-depth fridges, theirs will hold a couple of gallons in the door - not just one. Also their ice and water in door works a little differently so doesn't eat up too much room - and also there's ice on the bottom of the freezer that fills up the tray too so you have ice in a couple of different areas in case it's needed.

I just hope I don't wait and wait and then find out their new model doesn't use the new thinner insulation either! But even if it doesn't, 23 cu. ft. for a counter-depth french door fridge ain't too shabby. Our current one (family of 5!) is from 1990 and is only 18.2 cu. ft! We'll only be gaining 3 cu. ft. in the fresh foods part of the fridge (as opposed to freezer) but we'll also have the ice and water in door which will help us since usually we have a huge glass container of chilled water taking up space in the fridge, as well as a couple of gallons of milk and half-gallons of juice.

I hate my CD side by side. Thankfully it's at our vacation place so it's not my everyday frig. I cannot put a pizza box inside, or an oversize platter. A turkey will fit and yes the ice dispenser takes up lots of space in the freezer. We are forever rearranging things in an effort to make the food fit.

If you have to go with a side by side I'd suggest you research all models that will fit your space - compare the usable interior space and check the comparable sizes of the freezer versus the refrigerator. That's not standard so you might want to sacrifice a little freezer space in order to get a larger refrigerator side.

We have the GE Profile CD. It works perfectly for us (family of 5) but we do have a second frig in the garage. We were pleasantly surprised at how much fit in the CD frig. Ours has an external water dispenser but not ice. The water dispenser is slow but fine for smaller glasses of water. To us, the biggest design flaw is in the ice maker. Not well thought out - I guess they didn't usability test it. It is difficult to get to and the ice can fall out when opening and closing the door. Luckily for us we are not big ice users so we can tolerate this. If you use a lot of ice I would not recommend this.

My CD fridge is big enough for everything. It really is no problem adjusting. There was in fact no "adjustment". I have filtered water elsewhere, not in the appliance.

I've had a single door CD for almost three weeks now. Love it! I knew it would be large enough once the teenage son is off to college in the fall. So far it's worked fine for our family of four with the bottomless pit still at home! HA! I haven't had a holiday or dinner party with it yet though.

The thing I love the most is the fact that it stays clean! You can see things that have been in too long and get rid of them. In my old, beastly Amana things would get shoved to the back and cleaning was a dreaded ordeal.

I will have room for a second fridge when my Butler's Pantry is added. However, I feel the second fridge will be a luxury & not a necessity.
